I just bought 2 Rovers
I've been reading about the Desktop Rovers online and decided I just had to have one, then after thinking about it a bit more I decided it would be much more fun to have 2 because of the lazer tag feature. while looking into them I found this forum, looks like you folks have a new member to get used to (don't worry though I get along with just about anyone).
so can anyone tell me if the lazer tag on these things is any fun?
mine should be here in a few days and I'm very excited. as soon as I can afford it I plan on getting a few of those remote cameras to put on them. too bad they don't make 4 frequencies
I also plan on getting a small plastic vacume molder to make some custom bodies. the current bodies are kind of boring and it would be nice to at least have a change of colors.
I'm looking foward to getting to know all you forum folk

Welcome to the Forums Purple Penguin! I like the laser tag game a lot; my favorite way to play is via the video cams - my fiance isn't as good at driving as I am, so to level the playing field I go in another room with the pocket TV so that I can only see the first-person view, while she can see the entire battlefield. Great fun!
The body idea sounds great, let us know how that goes!

Purple Penguin, Greetings and welcome...it's good to have another Rover fan onboard.
Please let us all know when you get your Rovers. I'll be looking forward to your review of these tanks. The vacuum formed bodies sound very interesting...keep us posted.

Welcome Purple Peguin I have been thinking of ways to make bodies also.Poly carb bodies made in wedge shapes like battle bots would be cool.I have also been thinking if you made the battle bot type wedges you could make a small cooper wire antenna that would fit under the body. When fighting in close proxmity.

Okay, I just my two Rovers taday and I plan on using a good majority of tomorrow testing these things out and seeing what they are capible of. I plan on seeing how steep they can climb (fowards and backwards), how far away I can be and still be able to operate them. I also plan to test how good the lazer tag function on these guys work. like how far they can actully "tag" eachother and how accurate you have to be with them.
any suggestions on what else to check out?

Laser tag - Telecommander adds to the fun
The laser tag can be quite fun. There is room for end-user customization as well. Sometimes the dispersion of the IR beam can be a bit too wide, so you might want to collimate the beam for decreased beam width.
The Everlite IR sensors (there are 2 of these on each Rover), can be desoldered and mounted in other positions - to better simulate "armor".
The funnest laser tag games can be played with 4 players sitting about 10 feet away from the playfield area - usually the livingroom floor. Each player has the Telecommander Computer Interface software hooked up to his transmiter and to his own laptop computer... All players then program in about 20 seconds worth of commands into their Telecommander - after 2 minutes, everyone should be done programming and simultaneously hits the "Play" button on the Telecommander screen. Now we just watch! The commands are "open loop" so once you have chosen the commands for your rover, you are committed. You watch and see if your strategy resulted in hits on the enemy Desktop Rovers. Its a bit of a mouthfull to explain this game, but if you have friends with laptop computers, it is really tons of fun!

mortis
guess wot, another newbie on ur boards... i aint fussy and i get on with jus a bout n e one who dont get me 2 narked... any way we got a mint project goin on where i live.. PROJECT MORTIS MINI
sadly i dont have any pics but me and me m8s all got desktop rovers (i stil waiting for my new one) but we found an amazing shell which can be made
remember mortis from robot wars??? well guess wot... we made it.. we first used the original blue shell to protect the insides and added a lead block into it to give front weight...
then we made a poly carb shell in the shape of mortis... and we even managed to make a flipper... we had to destroy the lazer tag to do it tho... now when you fire on our tank.. the motor turns (we added it in the space the new shell made) which pulls out a pin that holds the spring down... pretty funny but we aint worked out how to make it come back down yet for anutha fire...
but hell it makes for good laffs... mortis vs lazer... no contest... cos theres enuf power in the flipper to lift another rover... and mortis MINI has no lazer reciever. but we dont tell challengers that
if anyones got ideas for making it return... please post... or n e thin for tha matta

Wow, replacing the FIRE with something sensefull is great
Can you configure the webdemo with fire! option, or is it just capable of what it does in the plantraco demo?
I would love a grip/arm to grab and place ping-pong balls ;-D

Pretty excited about mine getting here too. Did you have any fun with those custom bodies? Share some photos!
Plantraco - as an addicted gamer of RobotBattle, I totally understand where youre coming from. In fact, what you describe is one of the things that first popped into my mind when I originally saw Telecommander...
