Problems with UK customs?
Has anyone here had problems with UK customs? A while back I ordered one Bit CharG from Toy East and that came through in a few days with no problems and no customs charges.
Last week I order a pair of Digi Q tanks another Bit CharG and a couple of accessories totalling $192.51 USD (including shipping), £124.46 GBP.
Well over a week had passed and the parcel hadn’t been delivered even though the online tracking said that it was in the UK on the 17th.
After a few phone calls I tracked the parcel down to my local parcel force depot where it was being held until customs charges were paid (although no one informed me that it was there).
When I attempted to pick it up I was shocked to find that there were charges of £219.72 GBP on it. Consisting of 33.48 import duty, 173.25 VAT!!!!!, and 13 for some sort of handling fee.
Obviously I didn’t have the cash to cover that nor did I want to, I’ve been given a customs helpline number to ring but that’s been engaged all day.
I’ve also noticed that the value of the parcel was marked as $192, surely this shouldn’t include the shipping costs?
Is this all just a mistake? Or has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Thx for any help.

UK customs is a b******. I haven't been caught for my bit char-g's but that is because I never order more than about $20-$30 at a time. I have been hit for things, before I learnt my lesson. Make several smaller orders rather than 1 large one. It's worth it in the long run, the extra postage is nothing compared to what customs will slap on the value of your package.

No £219 is the charges on top that customs have made!!! So i'm hoping its a mistake. I've checked a couple of web sites about customs charges and the percentages they mention would be no where near the amount i paid.
I'll try ringing them again today and will update this when i get any more details.

How about customs in the USA? Has anyone experienced customs charges over here in the USA? I certainly am not going to pay ridiculous customs charges. C'mon, it's not like we're importing guns or drugs or anything, just "harmless" r/c cars :c)

Well after getting throught to Custom and a couple of phone backs they agreed that this was a mistake and very surprisingly cleared all charges (Duty, VAT, handling).
They fax a letter to the postal depot to confirm this and i was able to pick the package up this afternoon without a paying a penny, so apart from not getting my stuff on time it worked out quite good.

Way to go! I like when stories like that end happily! :c)
Now here's to me getting my shipment from ToyEast without the FCC or USA Customs messing with it!
What's in the order, you ask?... well...
Bit Char-G 2.2 Motor
Bit Char-G 3.0 Motor
Nissan Skyline R34 [Blue]
Nissan Skyline GTR Castrol 2.6
Bit Char-G Gloria [Tan]
Yay for me! :c)
That will make 3 ZipZaps, 3 Bit Char-Gs, and 1 MicroSizer :c)
Then all I need is a 57 mHz car to make 5 available at once [if they don't end up interfering with each other!]
