Zero to hero!

Long time since I Posted here!

Anyway, some time back TinyRC recommended I debble in a Mini-X. Owning a large fleet of small-scale RC cars, I took his advice and bought the Mini-X that comes with electronics.
I can't say I was overly pleased with the tires or motor that the Mini-X comes with. Lack of brakes was also an issue.

I decided there is room for cost effective improvement. Here's how I turned my Mini-X from zero to hero!

________________________________________

I fitted a hybrid motor into it, this consists of the standard Mini-X long shafted armature fitted into an unused BB can motor with Neo Magnets. I used the brushes from the Mini-X motor
This Mini-X runs 6-cell 7.2V 700mAh NiMh battery packs, which I picked up at the shop here

The difference is amazing, this car is fast, it ran away from my NML Evader BB/TLP Twin Turbo equipped Mini-Z like it was standing still. It also has a much faster top end than my modded 'Z, even though my 'Z runs a 9T pinion.
Acceleration is mind blowing, probably quicker than two of my three Micro RS4's.
The hybrid motor runs so much more cooler than the standard one did. We flattened a 7.2V pack over 20-25 minutes and I could still touch the can without fusing my finger to it...

We used an old Tamiya (Futaba) Pistol Grip radio to get past the problems experienced with the Kyosho Perfex TX, where the Mini-X has a tendency to cut out when you pull the TX trigger all the way back.

Now, because this Mini-X was so quick and powerful, I felt that it needed better tires.
Sure, Mini-Z tires are great, but the profile is so low and the Mini-X stands extremely low as it is.
We stole some rubber tires from an unbuilt Tamiya 1/24 kit, the profile is a little higher than the standard Mini-X tires, but the grip levels improved 100%

This 'X was so quick, we came to the conclusion that brakes are in order. I removed the standard Mini-X ESC and replaced it with a Novak SPY that I had laying around.
Brilliant, it goes like hell and stops decently too.

I then tried it with the Mini-Z Perfex TX and guess what? The TX works 100% with the SPY, you can hold the trigger wide open!

Conclusion:

The Mini-X is an absoloute bargain as it is at the price.
There are a few shortcomings, the issue with the Kyosho Perfex ESC, the standard tires and the heat generated by the standard motor.

Changing the motor can, tires and ESC unleashes the Mini-X's true pontential. These minor and cost effective changes turned it from a wannabe to a true pocket rocket that I believe can and will thrash most modded Mini-Zs and Micro RS4's at a fraction of the cost.

did neo mags slow your X down any. after i installed neos, the temp did go down but i had a slower top speed. sure i could get up to speed fast as ....! but i couldnt keep up with other cars. i instead use mags from the tamiya 4wd. they are stronger than the stock mags but not nearly as strong as neos.

Neos

3series takumi

Good point. As I never ran the standard Mini-X too much, I didn't realy notice a difference.
The Neos I fitted are not as strong as some of the Neo magnets out there, these came in the can which was an unused MZR-IIBB (Mini-ZRacer.com) Mini-Z motor.

All I can say is that my Mini-Z CLK is fast and it used to trash the Mini-X on acceleration and top speed, but the Mini-X makes the NML Evader (BB Can too) m/TLP Twin Turbo Mini-Z look a little - s..l...o....w.....

Where did the plastic clip holding the batteries down come from? Also, is there a source for the electrical connectors? BAE
