I gots a sodering iron from the rat shack i dont know if its the same as the one you have but it works just fine for me ive used it to transplant as many as 20 pcb's on mine and my buddies cars.i like the one i have becouse i can interchange the tips and it has a temp timer that keeps it at a constant temp.

me i have three guns one to melt plastic (don't want to smelly up a good gun, now i just use the dremel cuz it's more precise) a lower power one for smaller wires/circuitry ect... and a huge one for big wires (speaker wire 110Vmains voltage) they heat up in about 5-10 seconds as apposed to a whopping 5-10 minutes for a iron. so that means i can solder to batterys really quickly. i personally like guns and people who use my guns who are used to irons say they quite like how quick the guns heat up but arn't used to the shape/weight. it's just a matter of preference and you're own style.

it's variable between 100 and 140 (i don't dare use it on bits except maybe an antenna change LOL) and the big one is (sit down before you fall down) 240 on low and 325 on high (wouldn't bring it close to a small car not even a clone)

i would personally go with the 30 just so you don't have to wait all day for it to only melt wax. LOL i get frusterated using a soldering iron just caus i am used to having a nice hot gun quick.

why I said 30.

As most of you have already said. It becomes a personal option once you have used one or two different kinds.

And that is why I said use the 30 watts. I have use alot of soldering tools in my days...and for this application (small steering wires, surface mount resistors, etc). A 30 watt will get the job done, quickly, correctly and a reasonable tool to keep around the house once your done.

That quote about "to help get the job done use a bigger hammer"
does not work well here. A 140 watt probe on a surface mount is a bull in a china shop.

But that's just my 2cents...
