I have the same question.
Is the color coding universal on gear/rear sets?

I have found that color coding is inconsistent with the clone manufacturers. This goes for gears AND motors. The only time colors mean anything is with genuine Tomy or MicroSizers parts and accessories.

No. ZipZaps are slightly larger.

I originally transplanted my red "turbo" gear onto my shen's axle for looks, as it meant keeping my stock chromes, and the speed of the ZZ red "turbo" gear.
Well I went to a hobby shop today and plunked down 6 bux for the "Wheel and Gear Tuning Set" (HCAC1303) and I am VERY impressed!
There is a difference between the Zip Zaps gears and the Bit gears!
My fast car is slightly faster now since I put in the 8.25:1 set (light green), and slightly quieter when running.
I also noticed that the overall quality of the wheels is nicer than my clone too, so I think I will be using Bit parts on my shen from now on.
added note:
QFM's articles say this, I just learned for myself!

I have noticed that the Tomy/MicroSizers gears are of higher quality too! (especially the pinion gear)

I guess my big question is if the rears/gears go higher than 8.25:1 or is that the tops for speed gearing?

8.25:1 is the lowest "official" ratio for the BCG.
Hot Wheels KIT racer axles and gears can be used with minor mods to the axle, but IMO, the ratios are too "tall" to be practical with a BCG.

My Bensu Clone came with 12:1 gears, but with an 8 tooth pinion gear, which results in 7.25:1 (approximately). I bought the Microsizer axle/gear set, and got the following:
1. Tomy axles are .0035" larger, so I had to bore out mt chassis
2. With the 8 tooth pinion, most of the standard color combo gears didn't work well, but I did get a few good combos to run.
Blue spur / orange axle (best running)- 7:1
orange / aqua- 5.65:1
orange / orange- 6.25:1
I couldn't use the aqua spur at all, because the mesh was too tight, and would bind, and I couldn't use the 6 tooth pinion, as it wouldn't contact the spur at all.
I don't know if this helps anyone, but it'll work for the gee-whiz file.
