Question Charging duel cell bits

Ive just done the 2.4V duel cell mod to my bit, and the controller mod for charging, but only get about 10 seconds of boosted performance before all the power is lost and the bit moves at pre-modded pace.
I've been told that its cos the controller doesn't have enough power to charge the duel cells, and i need to build a stand alone charger.
Has anyone had any success from charging a duel cell BIT off the standard controller charger?

You have to double charge it. After the first 45 second charge is done, put it back on for another full 45 second charge. Did you switch to NiMH or did you just add another NiCd? If you have two NiCd's, two 45-second charges should be fine. If you have two NiMH's, two and a half charges should be fine.]

Or you could just build the stand alone charger, or re-route the internal wiring for the batteries to bypass the chip and just go straight to the charging plate. But you'll have to time it yourself, as the charger WILL NOT stop charging when something is attached to it.

I've got two NiMh cells.
I did the controller mod to bypass the timer, and charging from between 3-5 mins gives same result of boosted for approx 5 mins. Has anyone managed to get a good boosted run time from controller charges without building a stand-alone charger??
Looks like ill have to build a stand alone charger with 4AA batteries.

how many AA's should there be on the stand alone charger, I'm using 3 on mine and charging for 2 min. the car as significant power but for only a period of about 1-2 minutes then it completely dies. I'm running two NiCd tomy batts. Should i run 4 AA's in the standalone charger or could i just keep charging for say 5 minutes? im asking cuzz i dont wanna damage my bit from over charging.

thanx
