I am guessing either LEDs or maybe small CCFL (Cold Cathode Floresent Light) tubes you can get at autoparts stores, but they run off 12v. another possibility is Glowire, flexable "neon" wire that uses a copper core with a phospheresent coating with anotherwire wrapped around, again 12v. Most likely LEDs.
