There are 2 "spacers" that I am aware of: shims and washers. Washers have wider bands than shims, as washers fit over the axle, while shims fit over the outer shaft that holds the axle (the threaded part). Shims are supposedly good for improving the fitting between the wheel and the bearing. They are thinner than the washers, so their spacing abilities are less than washers. I only use washers with the front Radio Shack foam wheels, though, as the other wheels don't need them on my car & too much spacing lessens the # of threads holding the wheel on (I lost a wheel this weekend landing a jump with a washer on)
