Ya, they work fine. You should run them off a separate battery though. An old watch battery will run them for ever.

I actually purchased this same assortment of 20 for my car and currently have two on the bottom for ground effect lights. Wish I could get you a pic, but I can't right now as my cam is pretty much dead. I'll try to borrow one at school sometime.

the assorted LED package, IIRC, does have a couple 3mm LEDs (red and green), which is the size (T1) that you want... the 5mm LEDs could also be used, but only if you use fiber optic, fed off the LED head encased in shrink tubing (a better approach, IMHO) to feed to tail, turn signals, and headlights...

what i can't figure out is why Rat Shack stopped selling white T1 (3mm) LEDs, which would be perfect for headlights... guess there's no market, huh?

unfortunately, it appears that Radio Shack has now abandoned its traditional support and original 'Archer' kit ethics, and instead is more driven by consumer marketing... you used to be able to order thousands of different electronics, transistors, and other parts... the stock offerings have been diminishing over the last several years... you can't get self-powered LCDs, voice chips, or any of the other goodies that were so much fun to tinker with...

i'll give you another example - last year, Radio Shack sold a very inexpensive, but well-built AM/FM radio that could be charged up by hand-cranking for 90 seconds and then played for an hour... where is it now? gone from the catalog and on-line site...

this radio is perfect for hand-crank charging a zip and powering a controller - NO BATTERIES EVER!!! (the radio has a plug for plugging in 3V phone batteries)

too bad Rat Shack doesn't sell 'em anymore ... if it sold white LEDs, they could sell a thousand right now, judging by the number of people modding the zips...

i'd suggest you get two 2-pack of 3mm red LEDs, which work fine for tail lights (if that's all you want to add)...

just my US$0.02

Love QFM! Nice site!

Was very sad to hear of the demise of the RS catalog! Oh well.

Have you tried any of the following?

www.jameco.com
www.digikey.com
www.mouser.com
http://www.allelectronics.com/index.html { Surplus and strange }

Have bought parts from all of them over the years.

I think if you order over the net, Jameco does not have a minumn. But not sure.

PS: There's always Fry's if you close to them.

yah, I have countless kits I built by hand from RS in the 90's. I went to the BIG RadioShack store to find a 49 MHz Xtal to try to make a ZZ Controller that would do both channels, and they're like "what's a 49 megahertz crystal?" 4 years ago they would have been like "here! We have 300 of these ****ers!!! Take as many as you want!!! PLEASE!!!"

The people that worked there in the early/mid 90's and before were also usually halfway knowledgeable. Most were either HAM Junkies, or electronics nerds that lacked social skills, but could find anything for you once you convinced them you won't bite.

Now RS is like "You've got questions? We've got blank stares!"

Worthless for the tinkerer nowadays. I'm surprised I can still find a 555 in their stockpile. My guess is when they sell what they have, that'll be all. Same with transistors, resistors, etc. I used to be able to walk in to RS and walk out with exactly what I needed to make an FM Telephone bug (I used to sell them on fleabay) and I could make them in drothes. Now I can't even find the right capacitor there anymore.

O well. The moral of the story is: better look for more sources of LED's because I don't think RS will have them in stock by next year.

Cheap Surplus LEDs

A great place to buy LED's and all sorts of other cool stuff for tinkerers is:

American Science and Surplus: http://www.sciplus.com

I have been a fan of their catalog for years and there is tons of cool tiny surplus electronics, toys, science stuff, etc. The catalog is B&W on newsprint (no real photos,) but the stuff is mucho cheap and they have tons of neato things to play with.

If you ever get to the Chicago area, I highly recommend a visit to their 5316 N. Milwaukee Avenue store. I have been there on several occasions and it is a very cool fun place.
