So last night I was bored and decided to start playing around with the guts of my Zip. I had just put the NOS motor in and when I noticed how fast the thing went I got to thinking, what is keeping these gears and axle holders from wearing down over time??
Nothing.
So I took a bottle of powdered graphite and squirted a little on the part of the chassis where the axle mounts up and on the inside of the middle gear (Where the shaft coming from the chassis goes through). I also squirted it in the two front axles. This seemed to help free things up, and my Zip even runs a little more quietly now.
Remember though that graphite will conduct electricity, so keep it away from the circuit board, battery and especially your motor, or it could short something out. Its probably best to pull your motor out when doing this. Also, liquid graphite and powdered graphite are two completely different things. Powdered graphite will rub onto any surface and reduce friction at all times. Liquid graphite will have to be reapplied periodically, and its a liquid, so it makes a mess, whereas with powdered graphite, you can just blow the excess away.
Basically, this might make your Zip a little faster, but its main purpose is to save wear and tear. The graphite can be put in any moving part that doesnt carry a current or involve electricity.
Hopefully someone will find this useful.
