While I was working on my Mini-X yesterday, I encountered a prob which made the ESC LED to turn on (faintly) when just the 2 (3 for me) batts in the right side of the car is inserted (regardless of switch pos).
Found out that the prob was caused when the battery connector touched the servo screw. Kind of hard for me to explain in words, so take a look at the pic (circled yellow).
I cut off the portion and replaced it with an insulated wire instead. I'm not exactly impressed with the build quality....
thats very odd, i never had that problem. how is it shorting if the screws arent connected to anything? i dont see what is happening. and is your car version 1 or 2?

I'm using version 1 receiver, chassis, etc.. with a ver2 ESC.
It didn't make any sense to me too. Once the 2 batts in the pic were inserted, i can see the servo gear oscillating throught the transparent part of the servo.
That servo's screw is prob touching a wire somewhere inside the servo
