At the 1/3AAA size, you really only have the 1.2volt batteries. 1 batt is 1.2v to the motor, 2 batts is 2.4v to the motor (when in series).
Even if you were to mix-n-match NiCad with NiMH (which is a HUGE NO-NO) you still get an output of 2.4v.
In Series, you add the voltage. In Parallel you add the amperage. So using multiple batts in parallel would give you the same speed, but extended runtimes.
My suggestion if you want to do the 2.4v mod...Try different motors. If at 2.4v the 2.2 motor is too hard to control...consider getting a 1.0 or 1.6 motor. Then again, people that do the 2.4v or even the 3.6v and higher mods are usually lookin for pure speed (not necessarily control).
