I agree...first stage is the best. Second is ok...they tried to draw'em a little more true to life so some of the people look strange and some of the humor was removed. I haven't gotten to the rest but I'm personally in no hurry to. So yeah, definitely start w/ first stage!

I agree that 1st stage is the best, especially if you haven't watched any yet, it'll give you the ehads up so you know what the story's about and what's going on. Here's another reason to go for stage 1. Although in the later stages, the computer animation got better so the graphics look fantastic, the race scenes in stage 1 are a lot more dynamic. The angles that they capture the cars drifting and all. Better directing as far as the generating of the races. AND to top it all off. Stage 1 is almost twice as long as stage 2 and about 4 times as long as stage3.

That's true, 1st stage has all the typical Japanese anime super exaggerated expressions. Even Takumi pulls quite a few. Instage 2 and the rest though, they improved the artwork and the computer animation, but they tried to make it 'cooler' and therefore, less of the ridiculously comical expressions. Sad.
