I figured out my gearbox and motor today.

While I was messin with one of thoes cheap stunt cars, I opened it up and saw a cute little trans in a case and a mounted motor. The motor and gearbox look like the right size, and provide lots of torque and speed.

was that going to be your front tranny??? it looks like a good idea, but if you aske me, its too short....i thought about something like that but with an xmod evo truck dogbone,
which little stunt car were you messing with?? maybe it will work for me too....
i might use a modded servo as the tranny for my hummer, i want to give it a realistic stock look for now, and for my white chevy, the same look i posted here.....
still looking for leaf springs, might get some tomorrow at crown hobbies.
still gotta tube my axles out of brass.....any idea where i can get some hollow brass tubing?? and some lexan plastic?? ive worked with it before, but since i havent found any, i wanted to see where i might find some, lowe's maybe??

Hobby shops for the most part should have the supplies you need.
Also check craft stores and REAL hardware stores not the home depots and lowes.

Yeah, that was going to be my front axle. And actually, Thoes two knuckles, cups, and dogbone, put together are exactly the length as the stock distance between the front two wheels.

I'm looking for brass too. But there arn't any hobby shops around here.

YA gotta check the local HARDWARE stores they usually have a selection of brass/aluminum/steel/copper stuff the exact same as what is in the hobby shops.

I guess I have it easy around me since there are oh probally 20 hobby shops within an hours drive and countless hardware stores and more than a handful of craft stores. But there are, oh, 2-4 million people in the area also. (yuck) Southeast, Michigan.

I live in oakland county and only minutes from country like settings WHEW.

well i guess i have a lot of neighbors too, since i live in miami. but barely anyone is into serious R/C'ing, especially my friends, all too imature to really understand micro r/cs. and the local hobby stores, (except) only sell traxxas and HPI stuff.....so i gotta search really hard and go out far....as orlando to get stuff.
my crusher will have some off set, you can see it in the pics that the tires are completly outside the body, giving it a rougher look.
i am going to try and copy your design, but what did you use to connect the actual tire to the tranny inside the knuckle? some sort of axle end i suppose, cant really see it in the pic.
one thing i was thinking about is that the front tranny need to be simple, i thought i was going to make axle-ends, then dogbones and then the connection to the tire; but then i noticed how really small this thing is going to be, so i said screw it, dogbones as axle ends and thats it. but what is bothering me is the thought that such a simple set up will affect the steering radius...what do you guys think??

-Lino

EDIT:
does it matter if i use a dogbone with flat ends??? i know in real cars both ends are circular and even in other R/C...but considering the tiny size, i think it would matter...would it???

If your talking about my ZZ-awd project and the tire/wheel then all I can say is it gets complicated.

My plan is to basically make a tube(spindle) that a 6mm x 10mm x 2.5mm (Xmod-evo) bearing will fit over(pressed on).
Next I'll have to (lathe) turn a custom/combo rim that gets pressed onto the bearing and has a 3mm shaft that will come thru the tube(spindle) center and I'll turn it into a cup for the drive axle.
The custom combo rim will have to be shaped like a ZZse rim is to hold the tires on just like a stock ZZse rim would.

The tube(spindle) will need to have two tabs coming out for it to pivot on for steering. Not exactly sure how I want the tie rod to connect to it yet.

I plan on using a very VERY simple dogbone setup like what was used on the old OLD VW's with the swing axles, it was just flat at the ends of the drive shafts so I hope to make mine like that. And yes the tiny axles will be about 11mm long or so.

I want to get the basic chassis done and assembled out to where I need the spindles made.

For my ZZ-awd, I havnt decided which body I'll use but I plan to have the wheelbase and width the same as a ZZse.I also plan to have nothing sticking out of or on the outside of the stock ZZ body.

For my ZZmt chassis the wheelbase will be lengthened to around 55-60mm and be the same width as stock.I plan to use a stomper VW baja body on my truck. It is a little bigger than a stock ZZmt body.I havnt decided how much higher the truck will be yet but I expect that it will be around 10-15mm higher than stock.

Well the only possible problem I see is getting a ZZse servo stuffed in there but I have ideas on that also.

I dremeled my servo as much as I could to make it smaller. I'm hoping it will all fit still.

Yay! I tore appart my stunt car and found lots of goodies! A nice sized gearbox and motor, a steering gear box and motor, and a dual batt.

I'm getting started working on the front end. I need smaller fingers, thoes u-joints are so tiny!

The thought of an ALL WHEEL zipzap is just crazy but still have my doubts on it.
