Just a few questions from an old member
Hey guys. I joined here way way back. I started in 1/64ths, but moved to xmods. Since I got out of xmods(Couple years ago), I have went on to bigger and better RC. I currently have a HPI Savage(gas monster truck), A 21 inch carbon/woven kevlar El Lobo(boat), and a Yokomo mr4-tc(1/10th touring car). I just recently saw these new 'evo' Xmods. What are the major differences in them as opposed to the origanol yellow skyline(The one I had)? I was at my local Radio Shack, and saw the Infinity for $20. I didn't buy it, because of my past experiance with xmods(not to good). I hated the quality of workmanship, but I guess I was expecting a more hobby quality product. Have they changed at all? I now have a good space to use it in, and don't care to spend so much more money for a Mini-z, or 1/18th. Have the electronics improved at all? Thanks in advance.

They're better than the Gen1. Their turning radius is much smaller, and they're much less complicated. IIRC there's only three different kinds of screws in the Evo and something like ten types of screws in the Gen1, which generally makes them easier to work on.
They are not, however, hobby grade, and they never will be. No Xmod will ever be a MiniZ killer on anything but a straight drag. That said, Xmods are a lot of fun. If you and your friends all drive Xmods, who cares if they aren't as fast as a MiniZ? Everyone can afford an Xmod. Not everyone can afford a MiniZ.
Worst that can happen is you're out twenty bucks.

I realize that they will never be hobby quality. What I was planing on doing in the distant future was to strip the inside of all the electronics, and install hobby grade stuff. Thanks for the info.

Some people have done that, putting Iwaver stuff in the xmod. Personally, I don't really see the point. Why not just run the Iwaver? Unless there's some somantic arguement about what is or isn't an xmod. But yeah, it can be done.

I woulden't put Iwaver stuff in it. Xmods are cheaper, thats why I would buy one. What are some of the mechanical differences between the old and the new? Thanks!

Batteries are slung under the chassis. (better center of gravity)
Motor is mounted transversly (180 will not fit)
Additional gear in between pinion and final drive (more ratios)
Car is sealed up when assembled (keeps a lot of dirt out of drive train)
Second lighting accessory plug (ground lighting)
Chassis can be lifted or lowered (Better cg or gc )
Electronics will take a heavier load than the Gen1 cars. I don't recall off the top of my head just how much they can tolerate.

the new evos are way better
hey man, the new evis are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better then the generation 1. right out of the box, my stock mustang smoked my friends stock civic, i mean buried it. the turning is also MUCH better since there is a bigger servo motor. altough a wirthy challenger to the mini-z's throne as king of the minis, it will never have the quality of a mini-z, stock of course. xmods are SOOOOOOOO much easier to modify and invent your own mods than mini-z's and if you break your xmods, you can return it to radioshack or buy new stock parts, which are super easy to find, not like mini-z's. the new chassis can also be lowered or raised, and the wiring is super simple, if you put a gen 1 next to a evo, you cant tell which one is better, there are no wires crisscrossing either, the frying the antenna receptor is no longer a problem either, as the antenna is built in the package. the evo also hold higher current motors and was even said to hold the HC FATBOY for a while, it also hanldes much higher current.
anyways, it is like the rebirth of the xmod, redefined, i suggest you give them a second chance especially since the are dirt cheap to modify and are much more modifiable, if thats even a word...LOL

Haha, ok. I will probably get the infinity today. Thanks for all the info guys. I have been on lots of different Rc boards since last time I looked here, and you guys are one of the best. This was the first Rc board I ever visited. Again, thanks.

Hey guys, just to let you kow, I bought an Infinity. It looks like it will be nicer than the Gen-1. I will end up getting a set of bearings(not radioshack ones), and the AWD kit. I might get another motor, too, but not yet.
