which steering mod to do? combine them?
Not sure which forum this belongs in. Parts / Hops? Mods? This one seems to be the most popular...
Of the fixes out there which has the most obvious effect?
1) Resistor Mod (on board or inline is the same I guess)
2) Heat and bend mod (not sure what the salt does)
3) RS tie rod mod, w/o bending it
4) Trim tabs that restrict steering horn
5) Trim stoppers on the wheel on the controller
And finally, can I do all of these and really go nuts? Should it be sufficient to do just the resistor mod? Will it be sharp enough. As it is I hear people are rolling over with any one of these mods.
Which of these, if any, will not cause the awd to bind? Is that easy to fix, BTW

resistors will work the best.
after that to get the most steering out of it bend tie rods.
nice to see you here jraggio!

Thanks for the reply and the welcome.
I will likely try the resistor mod. I am leaning towards inling the resistors instead of soldering to the board. May be tough for my clumsy fingers.
Could somebody please explain why the resistor mod works? How does it cause the steering to go further?
Why exactly does bending the rod make a diffrence?
Thanks,
John

if you areinexperienced in soldering dont do the resistor fix.
the "bending" of the tie rods add more toe in.
anyway.. heres the schematics on the servo resistor fix.

Os this the one that you did? I read elsewhere to put 3.7 k resistors inline. Is that a variable resisitor in the diagram?

well its pretty simple really. the words are the color that they represent. rouge is red... marron is maroon... orange is orange... you get the picture. those 3 wires are the wires that are going to the servo.

Do you need to open up the servo to do this work? Is there a picture available? I thought I found one the other day, but I can't findi t again. I want to find one other than the Japansese site if possible.

it adds toe out. if you have basic soddering skills the external resistor mod shouldnt be so hard. the tie rod bending one is kinda tricky and i wasted a rod trying as well as staining the pan which was once nice and shiny toe out combinded with the resitor mod makes the car too twitchy... what youre doing with this mod is moving the ends closer to the pivot point thus making the knuckles move for less tie rod travel. (forgot what the automotive term for it was) buying the rs tierods wont do anything. just give you different toe in settings and cutting those tabs wont do anything because its the pontimeter restricting the steering and not the tabs. sorry if i was late to this thread and i think ive already helped on your other modification thread. i just dont visit this site too much anymore..
with rolling over i gess it depends on your cars suspension and tire settings. lower center of gravity will help and putting on harder tires in front will too (to create understeer). i think the resistor mod is sufficient enough for driving around in my garage.
fixing the binding, the c-cups tend to bind against eachother with the resistor mod. when you turn, the inside axle likes to push against the c cup in turn pushing against the diff and so causing alot of friction. what i did was exchange the inner knuckle bearing with a sanded down bushing so the axle wouldnt be pushing against the c-cup joint so much. hope this helps!

Thanks for the info spin. Is binding only a problem if you have AWD?
Do I need to open up the servo to put in the resistors? I just like to know what I need to do before starting. The car's only a week old and I don't want to end up with a paperweight. I haven't taken the car apart yet. I usspect this may be obvious once I do.
Looks like I'll be doing only this mod to make the steering more sharp.
BTW, is this the busiest xmod board? I don't want to start a flame war, I just hate posting / reading 4 boards on a topic.
Thanks,
John

Hi,
I did the inline resistor mod on my x-mod. I didn't even need to touch the servo. I took out the motor (like I was going to change it) and exposed the three wires leading to the servo. I soldered the resistors here, put the motor back, and was off and running.
I'm not very adept at soldering, and the whole operation took me less than 30 minutes.
Good luck
Ron.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed that you posted the same response to the "other" forum that posted the question to. It kills me to post to multiple forums, but it seems that there are some different audiences at each. I wish there was a way to "link" them somehow. As it is now I return back to each checking the replies etc. I may be on to something here. I am a software engineer and might be able to pull it off. ;-)
I have this problem with many forums that I use. I just wish there was always one main forum that everyone used for a topic. Then you run into the problem of which topic on the forum to use, but that is another story.
Which are the best forums to use for xmods? Is there one that I can safely stick with?

(is it allowed saying that?)

Today I decided since I now had an abundance of tie rods that I would attempt to bend one and see what kind of improvement it made.
<--- describes the look on my face when I took the first turn in my AWD RSX after the fix. I went from taking the whole width of the kitchen to turn to being able to do a figure 8 in the same space. I was so impressed I did all my tie rods. My turning circle decreased by half or more. By far the best and cheapest way of making tighter turns.
I give this mod a 10/10.
So any idea what it does to help?
