on these R/C cars, antenna length is not horribly crucial. On some applications, such as CB radios and HAM, antenna length is crucial for optimum range. You want either a quarter-wavelenth or half-wavelenth antenna. 27 MHz has a wavelenth of something like 35 feet, so for a quarter-wave antenna, the car would need a piece of wire hanging out of it that's about 9 feet long!
I'm afraid for most R/C cars, longer is better to a certain extent, but the actual antenna length on these cars is probably not scientifically calculated-- very arbitrary. If someone feels like they can suggest otherwise, feel free to debunk me. Maybe you get some advantage with a 1/32 wavelength antenna over one that's a little longer but I doubt it. BTW, a 1/32-wave antenna would be about 13 inches long, which is longer than an xmods antenna by a long shot.
