@helldriver
Could you post a picture how you mount the front motor?
What gears do you use?

I am working on a crawler as well. I am trying to make a real slow car for trial.

Diets,
I made my own motor mount for front motor. It made of battery cover for this X. I put pics (3) about it.
For gears, I still use the old configuration. The stock one. I just read your reply for my questions, thanks for that. I have some broken CD ROM, hahaa... But I still have something that my crawler should be seen as real as possible especially about the U-Joint. Well, lets see.

@helldriver
Thanks for the information - now i have some more questions.

Gear
Do you have no problems with the stock gear, driving over big obstacles? I think for a crawler you have to have a much higher gear ratio - maybe like the tttt - 1:100 or so.

Steering
I encountered serious problems, especially going real fast offroad. I think there should be a thight connection between the steering plate and the steering pins. The stock steering is too weak for real rock crawling. Can you steer when the car stand still?

diets - wants more power for the steering system

Sure it does. It was too heavy for crawling. Thats why I want to make with a single high torque motor, but I stucked with the U-Joint. Or should I use the smaller pinion? It means I have to re-arrange the motor mount, right?

Yes, it would really be a problem for the sprint off-road. But it was steering normally so far for crawling with - sometimes- loosen the rod, hehehe....
That was my handicap, it's very difficult to find parts for R/C here. This is my wish-list: U-Joint, steering swahsplate link, carbon fiber plate. Nothing here.

The higher the voltage the higher the speed of the motor. There is no great effect on the torque of the motor, is you raise the voltage.

The 130 motor has not enough torque to rotate these big wheels. You need a gear box with a high gear ratio.

If you use the stock diff and spur gear, then you have a gear ratio of 35:8, this means 1:4,375. You will need a least 1:20 for a straight road.

For rock crawling, you have to drive real slow, the higher the gear ratio, the better. In my actual project i have a gear ratio of 1:400, with a dual motor setup. Two motors is double torque.

diets - want's to see some pic's of your crawler

So if i understand correctly my Mini-x final drive will be 35:8 - 1:4,375 so if I add the Mini-z ratio of my design it shall be multiplied correct? so this will be around 45:6 ( i am to tired to count) - so 1:7,5 if I multplie this i get 1:32,8125 is this correct?

Will it be enough? - I hope it will do to get the thing moving in the first place

I have two different setting for my 4x4x4.

The above mentioned dual motor setting with approximatly 1:400. It is slow enough for crawling and has more torque the it will ever need.

The single motor setting, with one Topcad R02 modified with extra neodym magnets. The transmission consists of spur/diff gear combinations of the stock mini-x. The gear ratio is 8:35 for the center diff and another 8:35 on each axle. So i have a an overall gear ratio of 1:19. The mini-x goes pretty good with this combination. Enough torque and speed for an offroad track.

So i think your mini-z setting should be good as well. You can use larger spur gears if you like. The torque should be high enough.

diets - will show more pics of the 4x4x4 soon
