New generation of Xmods?

1 Attachment(s)
Are we already seeing the new generation changes on the Xmods like we did with the Zip Zaps?

Car on the left is one of the first Skylines, car on left is later Civic chassis'. Notice the receiver crystal on the older Skyline is sitting taller than the Civic. I checked this against my newer Skylines and the new ones are sitting low. This may have something to do with everyone having problems with their Skylines. Possible that RS noticed something wrong and fixed it?

And how it sits lower in the newer chassis Civic and new Skylines...

wow!
nice find bad company.
good work as usual:p
thats nice that they are improving the xmods

v0lc0m85 11-16-2003 09:29 PM

i noticed that too between my civic and skyline, i duno but i got my skyline like 2 weeks ago and i got my rsx and civic like 3 or 4 days ago and i noticed i havent had any problems at all with them and ive had a few problems with the skyline and even had to return it once. o well thats good tho right, they are getting it toghether

Bad Company 11-16-2003 09:30 PM

Yeah, my newer Skylines have the newer crystal plugs in them.

4G63T 11-16-2003 09:32 PM

when you think about it, it took longer for zip zaps to improve, xmods guys are pretty fast.....i guess because they are selling well and a lot of people were returning them.

Bad Company 11-16-2003 09:33 PM

Also, as aperson mentioned in his thread, the plug is made differently too.

4G63T 11-16-2003 09:35 PM

it really feels good that they are improving them, because let's face it they weren't the greatest..but still its only 50 dollars.

TypeZer0 11-16-2003 09:39 PM

my red supra which i bought a couple hours after they took it out of the shipment has the lower crystal plug

aperson 11-16-2003 09:40 PM

if you look closely at the crystal plugs, the new one has cylinders that are 1 piece instead of two and are curled out on top. so they look like a made piece. the only downside is that you cant adjust them if they get loose

4G63T 11-16-2003 09:42 PM

so does this mean the new xmods are better?

S K Y L I N 3 11-16-2003 09:51 PM

i got my skyline last week does that mean its different than the old ones

aperson 11-16-2003 10:00 PM

not necessarilily. check the crystal plug. if it has two metal contacts in each hole you are most likely to have a problem but if there are silver contacts in the holes they are the newer ones. and yes the newer ones are better because they shouldnt have as many problems as the old skylines had.

richh 11-16-2003 10:15 PM

i wouldn't read too much into it until someone can compare the actual pcbs inside. typically there will be a rev number imprinted on the board. it could be something as simple as the company making the pcbs has two suppliers for the crystal receptacle.

TypeZer0 11-16-2003 10:30 PM

since the changes aren't directly done to the pcb (until we have someone confirm there are changes with a magnifying glass) it may not have a new revision number on pcb

Bad Company 11-16-2003 10:36 PM

That's why I stuck the question mark in there. I'm not assuming anything, just noticed it, and brought it to the attention of everyone. ;) I may have to pull them completely apart and check later.

jco 11-17-2003 10:18 PM

this may help:)

oct. - purchased a rsx....short chip (one piece type)

week later - skyline....taller chip

day later supra... short chip

day later rsx.... short chip

purchased from the same store

havent had a problem with them (except for what i caused:D )

...might be different suppliers?

4G63T 11-17-2003 10:28 PM

coul be:confused:
good point over there

rob2fastx 11-17-2003 10:33 PM

The first skyline I bought had plastic rear axels the second had metal I think it was because the plastic ones broke easy. could this be one of the improvements

kasper01001 11-17-2003 10:48 PM

I noticed on the super street magazine that came with my XMOD that the cars featured has a white thick wire that connects to the antenna, while mine is black, also on the magazine, the crystal pops out too, mine doesn't, does anybody notice this too?

i belive that they have upgraded the axles. the other 5 skylines has plastic axles with the metal threads sticking out the end. that and has anyone noticed that there is only 1 capacator on the motor. dont some of them have 2

TypeZer0 11-18-2003 01:16 PM

i have two cap's on my stock motor. you could just grab another cap from RS and solder it in

SR20DETT 11-18-2003 02:32 PM

O.K, with all this talk of problems with Skylines that have the higher crystal. I'm wondering if you guys know what the return policy is. I haven't had any problems with mine yet, but I haven't run it alot. I've spent most of my time with it painting it. Which leads me to my next question. Do you have to return the whole thing? Can you just exchange chassis? I painted my chasis will they still take it? Should I just go return my car now saying I have a problem and start all over. I currently have about 12 solid hours of paint time in my car with another 3 to 5 before it's done. This kinda sux:mad:

4G63T 11-18-2003 02:51 PM

no they won't take it back if its painted:(
it has to appearce stock and not dammaged

viperkilla 11-18-2003 03:33 PM

You probably cant return it with the paint still on it. You should take off the paint or something and then try to return it.

SR20DETT 11-18-2003 05:45 PM

That seems stupid. I'll just hope nothing goes wrong or at the very least I'll be able to have it fixed if it does. Thanks

aperson 11-19-2003 09:37 AM

if i put another capacitor on my motor will that stop the stuttering problem? when it gets 8 ft away it starts to stutter

Bad Company 11-19-2003 05:07 PM

Something I noticed today in a RS. Looking at the Skylines, I noticed one with the tall reciever crystal didn't have the hood already installed, but the one with the short crystal did have the hood installed. Might not be much, but maybe helpfull when picking one up.

aero528 11-19-2003 05:15 PM

mine has a short crystal and the hood was not instaled. i think that is just because someone returned it and rs just put it back on the shelf(i heard a story of that somewhere here). i would be wary and make sure your kit has everything sealed.

TypeZer0 11-19-2003 05:43 PM

when i bought my red supra, the hood was pre-installed and as i said earlier, i have the shorter crystal

clg31187 11-19-2003 06:47 PM

I had the old skyline w/ plastic axels which broke so I returned it and got the newer one with the lower radio chip. I noticed that the fit of all the parts on my first one was much better, it did not have uneven torque, and it had better range. On my new skyline the body was much harder to fit together as the pieces did not line up as well, it torque steers, and I run out of range at about half the distance of my old one. Hmmmmmmmm...

aperson 11-20-2003 09:26 AM

you can also look at the capacitors on the motor. the ones with 1 capacitor on the left are the "new" xmods

eternaldragon 10-28-2004 03:54 PM

my new corvette i got 2 weeks ago i think that's when i got it anyway has shrink tubing on the end of the antenna where the solder joint is for the screw to go there to hold it to the chassis and a lower crystal but has 2 silver contacts in each plug.

on a side note does any one know how i can lower my crystal even more? i need to lower it or move the hole receiver board for a project im working on.

GoochGTR 12-29-2004 03:52 PM

I bought a skyline an it has the lower crystal but the range is stupid long.
I drove it almost an 8th mile before it started to slow down and quit steering.
I know because the block I live on is exactly one square mile.
Each side is a quarter mile and it drove just over halfway the length of one side.
It also had the hood preinstalled, but I saw both at RS yesterday.
On a side note. I bought the vett body for it and it doesnt sit really low on the front. In fact the front sits higher than the back and it looks really odd. I thought it was the crystal sticking up, but ater reading this I see I have the lowered crystal.

eternaldragon 12-29-2004 04:18 PM

my corvette has the same problem the front is higher then the back my friends corvette sets level the front and back set really high it looks like a land rover corvette lol even with the big chrome 5 star rims on it
