3.6v battery

I was browsing through a local computer parts store and came across a 1/3AA 3.6v 160mah NiMH battery today. I'm not an electronics guy by any stretch, but I've seen the 2.4v mod and have heard of some trying a 3.6v mod. What do you guys think about using this battery with the bits or zips? It is larger and heavier, but not much more than 2 1/3AAA NiMH. I'm kind of curious about whether the voltage or current would be too risky.

There is quite a size difference between one 1/3AA and one 1/3AAA :) I should've been clearer that I was making the size comparison to the space two 1/3AAAs take up compare to the space one 1/3AA takes up.

The pumper truck idea is similar to an idea I've been kicking around for a semi and using the extra batteries for the external fuel tanks.

3.6v is fine, mod away.

Someone modded a 9v to their car and it didn't kill it...So a 3.6v isn't going to harm it.

Just don't forget, it's a TWO part process! Once you've got a higher voltage battery...You're going to need to mod the charger to put out more voltage as well!

interesting

You sure it's a single 1/3AA NiMH that's producing 3.6v and not 3 1.2v cells wired together in a battery pack? That may have been what you meant and I just missed that, but the only single cell that produces that voltage that I've heard of is rechargeable lithium ion, and those require a different charging method than NiMH (don't know specifics). I could be wrong though.

If that really is a single 3.6v 1/3AA NiMH it might fit under the pcb (flipped like in some of the 2 batt mods). According to these comparison charts from batterystation.com it's just 1mm longer (the 1/3AAA NiMH's that tinyrc sells in the shop are a bit too short anyway) and 4mm wider in diameter. It'd be a tight squeeze, but you might could fit it in a regular bit. I thought of trying this but didn't want to carve up the insides of my bit to make it fit (slicing out plastic notch that holds old batt, moving terminals around, etc.)

I'll be curious to see what you find out.

The store I found the battery in was indeed a computer store. This store trades in various other electronic items. The battery was stocked in with their cordless phone batteries in unmarked ziplock bags so I'm not sure of its intended purpose. It was definately 3.6v 160mah NiMH battery. I specifically checked those. Unfortunately I didn't think to get the manufacturer. It could've been a Varta stack, but it wasn't obvious. It was smooth along the entire height except for a slight indentation near the top. The sizing was not specifically marked as 1/3AA. That was my guess. It looked like it could probably fit under the pcb.
