Drifting techniques and setups

How many of us drift our xmods? Tell your setup, your surface, and your technique in this thread. I will post mine when I get my xmod and get it dialed in.

striker289 03-05-2004 07:41 PM

there are alot of these but heres mine
awd
hard slicks all the way around
soft spraing all the way around
red s2 motor
surface= hard wood or tile

charliebrown 03-05-2004 08:39 PM

Stage 1 yellow motor, but with blue bevel gear
Soft tread tires
IC-3 batteries
Most important: 4 Wheel Drive

I apporach the turn at HIGH speed, all the way. I turn sharply and then apply a little brake, but very briskly (like for a plit second) then punch the throttle and gradually release the steering wheel for a niiiice drift. Normally, with RWD, the back wheels are spinning like heck....sure. But when you turn, the pulling force of the turn plus the wheels spinning like mad, plus weight holding the car down from flipping, can equal an E-Z spinout. And when you turn the other way to prevent spinning out, the rear is thrust so much from turning at first, that when you turn the other way the rear end is now allowed to thrust (lol.....perverts :p) out the other way, like a bouncing ball, cuz of the force from swinging around from the previous turn.

With AWD, or 4WD, you can turn sharply, and it will slowly lose traction, but that's cuz instead of instantly swinging it's bootay (heh heh.....no pun intended), the front wheels will pull it too....and RWD can't move the rear end around with the front wheels trying to pull it foward. Thus, you lose traction in all 4 wheels, and as it is about to spin out, let go of the steering wheel, and all four wheels are instantly pulling it straight, thus bringing it out of the drift and zooming it away. :)

I'm extremely sorry, dude, but I don't have the right camera to do it. I can't record directly on the memory card, thus the recording is not turned into a computer file....I can only do it on a tape. Sorry bro. :(

But, if I were to plug a wire from the camera to the PC, and play the video on the camera and record THAT onto the PC...then I'd have it made...I just need the right software.

RC 2NR 03-06-2004 01:05 AM

Setup: Look at sig, hard slicks, LSD @ 0-5% slip
Surface: Hard concrete slab
Technique: Accel off, and power over

350z-zz 03-06-2004 10:05 AM

Skyline drifter

motor : s2 yellow SB hybrid w/ blue gear

surface : tile

tire setup : foams all around
( this surprisly helped me out alot by making me able slide out a little bit on my grippy tile and also decrease bumpiness due to the divets in the tile.)

Also : AWD , battery's in center position

xmodsman 03-06-2004 05:24 PM

i have hard springs becuase it will help slide becuase the soft spring have too much toe in and will able u to go around the turn smoothly.

awd
mini-z tires
stage 2 drift(duh)
o and :bdrop:
hard wood floor

Spring rate has nothing to do with toe.

viperdout 03-06-2004 05:57 PM

I drift on my street w/ my car. I have to get a running start to, though.

Setup is:

RSX pulvarized into a beater (I wanna paint it Flat Black, old skool)
Red S2
6 cell
IC3s
Bearings
Stock everything else

spinitsidewayz! 03-06-2004 11:25 PM

RWD drifter;)

i set my car up for natural understeer. when you punch it enough to break rear traction tho, it oversteers. i can get some nice manji drifts with this set up too.(swaying back and forth down a straight)

suspension
-hard springs
-1.5 toe in
-rear stabilizer bar
-negative camber(rear)
tires
s1 custom: medium
s2 hybrid: soft
*the more power, ull want to have more grip.
-gear diff lsd (90% lock)

FalkenDrifter 12-21-2004 05:27 PM

Hey. I need help with a setup. I will drift on the driveway and street. What is the best setup for me? Also how do you change your camber? It looks awsome and i think it will work.

ChenPokoMasteR 12-21-2004 05:32 PM

AWD Kit
Soft springs(red)
Drift Kit
Stage 2 motor(red)
take off the body and your set :D
(Light weight reduction!)

FalkenDrifter 12-21-2004 05:56 PM

ok thanks a bunch. But, i have been told to use hard(blue) for it.

spinitsidewayz! 12-21-2004 08:22 PM

harder will be your best bet. more responsive and easier to break traction.:) make adjustments from there.

Murcielago659 12-22-2004 12:17 AM

More negative camber would actually decrease your ability to drift. The only reason why you see pictures of old school drifters in japan with a lot of negative camber because that's the only way they can control the car with their junkyard tires. Yes, it does look cool, but it does not help in any way. I had my old skyline drifting pretty well on the slick concrete floor in my basement. I had blue springs all around, the 4.5 degree tie rod, and soft tires. It would slide pretty well if I did a scandinavian flick first, which is where you turn away from the corner before turning into it.

ben1112 12-22-2004 12:33 AM

i dont really think that 2wd can drift better than 4wd in this scale

who said it could?

about camber: camber was mostly for looks/fitment, theres alot of factors to go with the physics part of it though. front wheel steering/suspension geometry change as you turn, adjusting contact patch, lateral acceleration stuff... you'd want more in front to make up for understeer and that stuff as you counter, tires seem to break traction smoother blah blah blah... also in alot of cars as you lower you get more neg(-) camber. oldschool guys prolly didnt have RUCAS:p

i run a good amount in the rear, havent figured an easy way to adjust the front yet. this way i can correct the oversteer from my lsd. rwd is much harder and slower then awd in this scale but IMO much funner. the camber makes my tires wear out funny:)

ben1112 12-22-2004 01:07 AM

ok, my bad... can anyone post a vid of 2wd drifting? ive never seen one in action

spinitsidewayz! 12-22-2004 01:18 AM

i would if i could.. sorry, no camera. :( Alot of understeering and then spinning out involved. haha

FalkenDrifter 12-22-2004 07:44 AM

well camber in real life lets you go around corners faster. Also i wanted to know because im making a show car because i friend my electronics so im using that chassis and body.

wacko_boy 12-22-2004 03:21 PM

everyone doing the hard way to drift, and sounds to complicating...
in reallity all you need (people that have RS motors)
awd
stage 2
drift kit
and youre good to go, just DONT break. turn and counter steer

No. Do you know what is camber? If you dont know already camber is the tilting of the top of the tires inwards, towards the chassis. It DOES not make you go faster, when the car corners and rolls or leans, it allows a better contact patch with the ground, generating more grip. It DOES not automatically make you go faster. Anti-roll bars (stabliser bars in R/C) can cut down the amount of roll generated during cornering and thus reduce the amount of camber needed.

2fast4u 12-23-2004 11:19 AM

well...

i dont drift any more with my xmod but i can tell u wat u want to do...

do not use foam it will result in uncontrolable spins wat u want to do is get the hardest rubber tires you can and a super torkey motor with white gearing also a soft suspension in front and a hard one in back works really well the thing about drifting is u dont want an uncontrolable spin u want a spin where u can regain contact with the surface at any time like if you decide to change the angle of the turn.
i never used AWD but i heard it works(i dont think so)
just go into the turn under half throttle and while the momentum of the car (BEARINGS BEARINGS BEARING!!!) swings you into the turn hit the gas which will break ur tires free and as u want to finish the turn let go of the gas half way and then slowly accelerate. DO NOT USE THE BREAKS!!!! if u do this right then u wont loose any speed which is the objective!

[edit]

p.s counter steering doesnt work unless you use a faster rc like a miniz or something. if you counter steer u will just go out of the turn.

Skurge420 12-23-2004 03:20 PM

as for my drifting setups:

Skyline:
Micro RS4 180 motor(11tooth)
AWD
Titanium driveshaft
RS drift tires or hard slicks
4.5 tie rod
Locked rear LSD
alloy rear cups

RSX
S2 9 tooth
CF driveshaft
RS drift tires or hard slicks
AWD
4.5 tie rod
alloy front hubs(dam things always break)
alloy rear cups
Locked LSD

I usually drift on concrete....but sometimes on hard wood floors....in that case i use the hard slicks

here's a small vid i put togather, on the bottom of the page
http://mini-zracer.com/gallery/Skurge

note..... the track shown is not my current track, its my setup as of a few months ago

i'll have to take some pics of my new setup

spinitsidewayz! 12-23-2004 04:31 PM

whats a locked LSD...?

There's no such thing as a locked LSD. I'm sure he meant a locked differential, which means he glued the gears inside together.

No need to apologize, it's often difficult to detect sarcasm over the internet.

ChenPokoMasteR 12-26-2004 03:51 PM

Heres a little something....ill get it better when i get somebody to film it for me :P

http://www.rcpics.net/view_single.php?medid=45472

2fast4u 12-26-2004 10:41 PM

cool

well that looks cool and all but i mean it doesnt look like ur really breaking the wheels free ur just kinda sliding around still koll tho!

ChenPokoMasteR 12-26-2004 10:49 PM

Well...i really couldn't do much since the camera was in my lap....when i actually get somebody to hold the camera ill show what i can do :D

2fast4u 12-26-2004 10:59 PM

cool

im looking forward to it theres only so much u can do with the camera in a fixed position lol

ChenPokoMasteR 12-26-2004 11:16 PM

lol yah....i can drift the whole play room with is like 25 feet or more :P

wacko_boy 12-27-2004 01:35 AM

either , the bad camera angle or something, cause all i see is spinouts and doughnuts , you drifting right?

Murcielago659 12-27-2004 01:39 AM

If you really want to show us something, get a few paper plates and set up a little course on your floor, then drift that. I'm sorry, that is not drifting.

No its a bad camera angle....and i cant do much when i cant move around

2fast4u 12-27-2004 10:11 AM

dont u guys read?

he said the camera is IN HIS LAP ofcourse he cant do much but he did a great job while being restricted by the camera and some of those drifts were good he said he will make a new video with someone holding it for him

murcialago i agree yea it wud be better if there were cones and stuff a while back wen xmods came out there was a pretty good video somewhere around here

Horshu 12-28-2004 12:06 PM

I was able to drift pretty regularly when I first got my XMods NSX. At the time, I had the following:
clean garage floor w/ racetrack
RWD only
Stage 2 drift
soft slicks

It wasn't a whole lot of slipping and sliding (my AWD can do that now with neo magnets), but it was great for racing, as it takes a quick flick of the throttle trigger and a controlled jerk of the steering wheel, and it would do some nice drift turns.
