It probably won't kill anything to use a resistor there, but I'm thinking that if the original engineers used a coil there, they must have had a reason for it. :lol: I'm betting that the range will not be as good with the resistor as it would be with the correct component in that spot. Certainly better than nothing, but not ideal, either.
RS might have something, but inductors are a bit harder to find than resistors, and caps.
www.jameco.com might be the best place to look.

thanks neuro. if i replace the coil with a different one that should extend or shorten the range right?
the guy at RS that i talked to ususally knows alot about electronics. he said i was a resistor so i went by that

I just shorted something by touching the antenna tire with a soldering gun.
Pleas make it cimple for me. I don't want to buy a new PCB if I don't need one.
What do I need to replace?

Probably L2. It's an inductor, but we don't know the value for sure. The best guess right now is 100μH.

Anyone want to buy this car? I can sell it for $38 shipped. I'm including all stock parts.

The color code on the inductor coils is as follows:
L1 = Green, Blue, Gold, no 4th band
L2 = Yellow, Red, Silver, No 4th band
Both have no 4th band so by default they have a 20% Tolerence.
Furthermore the Gold and Silver bands are multipliers.
Gold is by 0.01 and Silver is by 0.001
L1= 5.6uH DigiKey Part number - M7822-ND
L2= 0.47uH DigiKey Part number - M7809-ND
L1= 5.6uH Mouser Part Number - 434-22-5R6
L2= 0.47uH Mouser Part Number - 434-22-R47
L2 is not exactly the number which is 0.42uH but this one will work or you can search around for the same rating inductor.

wow i know everyones gonna think im so stinking retarted, but how do even take the plastic piece off with the crystal on it to check the L1 and L2 inductors?

you have to take out the everything. remove the back end like you were going to change motors, then pull everything in the front apart except for the front tab. (take the springs off the front it will make reassembly easier.) remove the cone gear if you have AWD and take the tie rod out. then there should be 1 screw on each side of the power switch, take them out and above the front driveshaft holder (right in front of the crystal) there will be a third screw you need to take out. remove the battery cases by sliding them back and lifting them up and then just pull the whole system out. hope taht answers your question. if not: one of them will look broken, it will have a line black line through it or it will have a black ring around it. thats how to tell if it is broken/ blown.

Hey, I have 2 supras, one is broken and is now used for spare parts and the other is what I play with. The one that I play with shorted out(my range is now 3ft.) when I did the 6 cell mod(white smoke was coming out from the PCB). I opened it up and saw that the L2 inductor is all black and it chipped away like charcoal. My other supra that's used for spare parts still has its L2 inductor in good shape so I plan on switching it with the burnt one. My question is pretty "stupid" but how do you desolder the burnt L2 inductor so I can remove it? I know how to solder on the new one but I don't know how to desolder Thanks!

Thanks And I couldn't find one of those in my dad's toolbox but I was too anxious to do the L2 inductor "switch" So what I did was I heated up the solder with the soldering iron and when it melted I lifted up the inductor carefully until I had both "pins" out from the circuit board. Now my xmod's range is as good as when I first bought it. Many thanks to the contributors from this thread!

My range isn't back to "perfect", it's a bit glitchy once it gets to 8-10ft away... but that's better than the old 3ft range.
