LED voltage

2 day i bought 2 3mm leds 2 put in my bit. I am also using these tiny little leds that i found at my uncles house. I tried the 3mm leds on a 3V watch battery and i can hardly see them. the smaller 1s are fine on 3V however. would 6V be 2 much 4 3mm leds? what voltage should i b powering them at?
