Welcome to TRC.... you can try to spin the motor in the bay it sits in. Sometimes they only like to sit in there a special way. There's also a little metal tab on the end of the motor, and it helps to lift it up with a razor blade..

Or, another idea would be to put a very small piece of aluminum foil between the motor and the motor contact.
Stick with the nicads. The nimh doesn't do anything the nicads can't do except run longer. But you really need a peek flow charger to get the most out of the longer duration. Also, you can drain a nicad without ill effect, but if you continually drain a nimh, it will loose power over time. They should be stored with a full charge. If you ever noticed, the companies usually send it to you with a charge. The car always uses energy, even at rest (something like 7ma), so if you charge it on a stock charger, then it will drain the battery after about 15 minutes or so. If you put an on-off switch on the car then that will protect the ninh batteries. I've been running these cars for a while, and all my nicads are still going strong, while all the cars with nimh have slowed down about 10~20%.
As far as motors; If the motor doesn't work or slows down, then hook it up to a 3volt camera battery for a few seconds. There's enough juice in those to make the motor run really fast and nock loose any debris that it may have picked up.
The best motors I've seen are the perfection 3.8. There may be better, I've only tried a half dozen different companies motors. I haven't tried the R-spec that they sell here, but I hear it's really good. Tomy 2.2 and 2.6 are ok subs. If you see a clone motor with a black end then grab it. Those are pretty fast too. I've only found two over here, but I wish I could find more.

Sweet, I just got the Project D set yesterday too. I put the motor from my Bensu clone into the chassis. The color on the motor is blue (a couple shades darker than the 1.0 Tomy), and it seems like it's a 3.0 cuz my car goes flying on its side whenever I try to turn. I guess the clone doesn't show it much since it uses like a 10 tooth pinion gear. The metal contact on the Bensu motors is also in the center instead of off to one side, so you can just put it in any way, which is pretty cool ^_^
