180 or just go 260??

hey, i've been gone for awhile but my friend brought xmods up again and i can't resist moding so...

right now i've gone as far as to take a stage 2 advance the timing and put SB mags in. But i need more.

It seems that the best bang for the buck is the either a bigger motor or lith-ions. I've read through some threads and found that the first thing tried as far as motors go was a 180. Wel i founfd the list of options on 180's which is great. I'm thinking the Team Orion stock minus 10 turns. - sound ok?

The only thing holding me back is that i've heard that winding a 18- is alot harder than winding a 130 - which i've never atempted. I'm willing to try but then, after searching more i found that there is a 260 that fits well. I think it was like a "hoppin hydro" or sumthin. any coments on it? does it fit w/o modification besides being longer? What voltage it designed to run on?

If i use bigger motor are there pinions with more teeth? B/c it seems the bigger moters have good torque but b/c the are for a higher voltage they have the same or lower rpm output - and speed is one of the most important things to me since torque at some point becomes usless. Some one had posted some that worked but had to be sleved - any word on these?

I'm also planning on doing the fet mods b/c i'm sure i'll need it. How many volts can those 180's/260's take? B/C i want to eventualy do lithiums - maybe multiple lith poly's with that "V2.2 Power Regulated Power Management Board" WAY down the road.

Wow that was aolt - i'm sorry to take up your time, i hope u guys can help me!

dude best bang for your buck is lithium upgrade by far
- www.undergroundxmods.com (cheap lithion and charger)
then if you like custom motors get carbon brushes neo magnets and bb can...once you upgrade your fets you than can try experimenting with the stage 2 armature by reducing the turns 10-25 less the most i have taken off is 25 turns(high revving but low torque)
- www.rcmart.com , www.minixracer.com , www.minizworkshop all have these items

oh if you get any of the above you definately need cup joints/shafts as they will break easy

dude personally i wouldn't mess around too much with 260 motors as 130 motors are good enough...plenty of torque!
although a team orion 180 is exceptional with accelleration but not with top speed...oh yeah and a pain in the but to take apart(to reduce turns you have to file down the tabs holding the endbell on)
Have fun

thanx for the reply - it helped quite abit

i just had a few more quetions:

would it be best to take a 180 and reduce the winds? Or is it too hard to find other parts for it - mags, bb cans ect (are the brushes the same?)

also where is the best place to get fets?

and lastly - are the neo mags any better than the SB magS?

thanx again!

the store here is good to get fets if you only need a couple but if you want to buy more than 25$ worth (they're about 2.50 a pop) www.digi-key.com is you best source. Neo magnets give more torque but lower top speed. A step up from sb mags
180's don't have neo magnets nor bb cans...if you get a fk-180 or a team orion they both have carbon brushes.

cool.

would steping up to neo mags but at the same time taking off a couple winds compensate for the lower top speed? or would they just cancel eah other out?

yes it will...also something interesting to consider is that neo mags lower the current draw on motors so 40 winds (taking down 9-10 winds) is safe and draws about the same current(maybe just a bit more)...has much more torque and actually revs a tiny bit higher too(of course the motor is going to heat a little more so careful with long runs(use silver solder for the wires on the comm)...stall current i believe is only raised a bit higher which only affects launchs...but its only a spike...remember to water break-in you motors...this motor works well with 6 cell
