I don't know the electronics, but I do have an idea for the actual pods. It calls for a pen (yet another use for the infamous pen). Take the tip of a click pen, then cut it with a dremel (look at the picture). Slip a led through the small side, make about 3 or 4 of these, then slap the whole thing into some putty and bam...
This might be too tediuos, but it came from the top of my head in like 2 seconds while looking at a pen doing some homework.
