Hmmm!!! What about a pure mechanical solution, well sort of, one could use the forward/reverse to control a screwdrive type setup, similar to the one that moves the heads on a 3 1/4 floppy drive, just a LOT LOT smaller. anyways this will move a resistor type speed control that could feed the wheel motor from an independent battery.
SO you would tap forwards to move slow then tap again to go FASTER, and so on.
