Its a worthwile trial. But actualy you have a two stage problem.
The first "Xtal" is basically solved by the wide open receiver designed. It will accept a signal around 27mhz { if the car is tuned for 27 } Its not a specific tuned for a specific freq. There is no xtal in the car just a crude receiver.
The 2nd catch and may schuttle things using any other controller is that the Receiver-Decode function IC is looking for the codes generated from a TX2C chip. Its basically a simple cheep low cost chips set consisting of a "encoding" TX2C with a "decode" RX2 chipset. Unless the controler you are trying has that chip set with the correct resistor on its OSC pins the car will egnore any commands from any other controller. If it does then as some have found out not all direction are wired up the same way.
The TX2C/RX2 chip set are five function. No functions are porportional just on/off. All it has is F,B,L,R & boost.
