you are right in that the ko branded model does not appear to use the kyosho modulation thus will not be compatible with the kyosho asf system.
i'm not sure why kyosho decided to go proprietary other than adding yet another revenue stream to their pockets. it's likely they just pulled the asf off the shelf as it was already in use by their flight product line.
kyosho has rebranded the model as a kyosho transmitter for use with thier asf system so it will not work with the standard 2.4ghz system larger scales use.
