What was v1.0 like?
Version 1 was just some other Motor and a different type of steering - like the ZZSE have. I don't know the english word, in German it is "Zahnstange". But it did not work, so I used the "traditional" steering-servo.

I own a ZipZap SE now and I must say: I am somehow disapointed - I thougt they would work better, but the steering sucks and you can count the steps for throttle/steering.

@ cheesehead: you should really try to build one! A car like this is really great fun and can't be compared to a ZipZap or Tomica - steering and throttle are much more precise but it is still "bit-size". Since I allready owned the parts (for a TTTT-project) I did not care much about the "costs" What kind of ESC do you want to use? Built from a Servo-Board? The one I use works at voltages as low as 2,8V, so a single Lithium-cell (135 mAh) works fine. This ESC is available at http://www.mikroantriebe.de or at http://www.mikromodellbau.de - those are shops specialised in TTTT-parts.

And by the way: thanks for all the postive reactions on the car!

Greetings from Germany...
