C cells have more current capacity, meaning they will last longer. Given the same voltage, the current will be the same; the load dictates this. Increasing the voltage with a given load will increase the current.

I would not recommend going above three cells. Also, if you want to increase the battery life put the same number of cells in parallel. For example,

+cell- --- +cell- --- +cell-
| |
+cell- --- +cell- --- +cell-
| |
|---controller circuit-----|

Some alegbra ... V=I*R (voltage equals current times resistance).
