Charge Dual Batt With Your Controller

my crazy mad scientist friend came up with a pretty good idea last night. he wants to install a doublethow double pole switch into the battery circuit. http://www.bep.co.nz/products/sp_32120.jpg
we couldnt find one small enough in his shop to do this last night tho.

he says it will have many benefits. first of all you will be able to switch between a series and parallel circuit for your batteries. in parallel you would be able to charge with a normal controller then switch the circuit back to series and have that power again.

also you would be able to turn the car "off" when not in use so the batteries dont drain overnight.

the hard part of this mod will be finding a switch small enough.

Would get a bit messy, but this has some real possibilities.

If i'm seeing your idea properly, it would be something like this..

Very interesting. You can always find a small enough swith on an old ZipZap or Atomic Z controller or any other controller that has an on off capability.

Not necessarily Stridex, the switches on the Atomics and ZZs and such are only single-throw...The mod hogjowlz is suggesting needs a double-throw

namuna: our data matched up for once

Sounds promising.
Hey Hog, who is this guru buddy of yours coming up with these ideas?
Is he into the hobby?

hogjowlz 02-13-2003 01:02 PM

he is an electrical engineer who used to drag real cars. and yes he has a few of these.

Off you go...

The one on the Atomic-Z that was used to switch the showroom lights and motor sound will definitely work. As for the on/off switches...They all have three pins. I just figured instead of off being off, you take the first pin and make it a circuit. On would be parallel and the off position would be series. I just thought three pins meant two circuit possibilities.

EDIT:
You wouldn't be able to turn off the car from draining the battery, but....

Namuna 02-13-2003 02:13 PM

double throw, single throw..single pole, big pole, monkey pole...I gotta adjust myself.

You're right Stridex. A single-throw, double-pole would work...You lose the 'off' state of a double-throw, but you gain a nice small switch.

Can you make a diagram of how this would be wired up to the PCB/ battery terminals/ etc.? I.e., the whole picture? :)

hogjowlz 02-13-2003 04:19 PM

my friend who came up with this has it in his head right now. ill take pics as we do it

The switch would probably fit in the rear window, with the antenna through that little hole in the upper portion. I'm shure radio shack or someone has a switch small enough.

i told him about being put in "bit science". he thought it was funny. hes gona draw up a schematic today or something.

heres a rough schematic that my friend drew up. we havnt found a dpdt switch small enough yet so he hooked one up with jumpers and well it works. the only problem now is losing the jumpers.
