pcb swap help

I have a clone that i am wanting to swap its pcb board into my zip
but when tested on the multie meter it regesters about the same as my zip
does so is it worth it to do this mod?? I dont know what brand clone it is
some kind of bullet it says gt on the controllers battery door. And I want to do
the swap with a dual battery so if anyone [stridex] could give me some input it would be great

Where'd you buy it?

A quick test, as long as the motor isn't soldered in, is to take the same motor out of your Zip and put it in this clone. Do you see a speed difference? That should tell you whether or not it's a worthy doner. Use the same Zip battery too if you can and fully charge it. I haven't found a clone yet that has as bad a PCB as ZZ's.

I got it at a gas station for 15 bucks

im going to do the test know

well im sold on it i changed out everthing into the clone and it flew
then i put my zip back together and put fresh batteries in both charged
them and tested them again and the clone tested at 185 mah
the zip tested at 118 mah so now its time for the pcb swap...

That test would convince anyone :)

It's a fun project, just take your time and plan in advance where you want everything to go.

[stridex] i got a clone shen qi wei and i want to swap the board.my question is the clone is a 35 mhz and the zip is 49 is there a way to use the zip controler?

Stridex 12-09-2002 01:19 AM

Just for charging. :) Your Shen will have to control it still. Too much to change, from what I heard, in the actual controller. They said just swapping the crystals is not going to do the trick. I was hoping it was just something little you could solder off the old zz PCB. Apparently it's not. I'm trusting others on this because I know very little about the electronics of these things.

thanks

i tried the same thing when i did my first swap, i desoldered the crystal and put it into the zip controller, didnt work, there more to it than that. so i dont have any of my cars that actually use zip controllers, which is ok because they suck, unless you have little fingers that can actually control it. i much prefer the knockoff controller or a bit controller with the big square buttons, mush easier!! oh yeah, another tip on the pcb swap is to write down where all the wires go for each pcb and what color goes where, they are almost always different colors. also on the steering wires pay very close attention to stripes on the wires and where they attach at the pcb, if not you will be confused as to why it doesnt steer right and you'll be doing it all over again

crystal swap didn't work?

natedoggg,

What crystal swap did you try?

I tried swapping the 35 MHZ crystal from a Panther controller to a 27 MHZ ZZ controller, and was able to control the Panther car.

Could it be that the low pass filter doesn't mind swapping lower to higher, but does F up higher to lower?

it was awhile ago and i dont remember the exact freq's, i know one was a 57, but it didnt work, i fixed the controller anyway, so its cool now
