speed control?
 

okay i am bored and thought about using a slide controler like the old lap tops have for the contrast or even a rotary dial to control the speed, my idea is if some how one was rigged up could and would it be posible to control the foward reverse with the thumb and with the index finger slide the dial to control speed i have no electronic know how and want to toss this out there



also if it has been covered just direct me cause i couldnt find it in the search

um...with R/C you gotta send a signal from the radio to the car..and the car gots to receive it...so putting an extra button on the controller isn't gonna do anything, you gotta have it send a signal to the car, which the electronics on the car have to receive...if you can get that far, you can do pretty much anything...just make sure you let the FCC know what frequency you plan to use so you don't piss off you're neighbors.

Hmmm!!! What about a pure mechanical solution, well sort of, one could use the forward/reverse to control a screwdrive type setup, similar to the one that moves the heads on a 3 1/4 floppy drive, just a LOT LOT smaller. anyways this will move a resistor type speed control that could feed the wheel motor from an independent battery.
SO you would tap forwards to move slow then tap again to go FASTER, and so on.

I attempted to do something similar to what you describe, however, I found a clone that already has two speeds, which basically made my idea obsolete. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try something new though, you never know.

hmm.....the zz sends power to the motor with transistors that turn fully on or off, and its not Pusle Width Modulated, I checked it on my scope. There is one way you might be able to do it. Pulse width modulate the foward and reverse buttons, this way the signal to the car will PWMed and you will have a very nice and smooth speed control. Anyone interesed on how to do this, its pretty easy and you can get the parts from radio shack. I think im going to do this, its going to be cool.

Talk about Turbo LAG :) but it could work! as long as the delay is not to big I can see that you could just can keep tapping forward
in the curves....It might be harder that just swapping transistors since I've seen people go to great lengths as to adding a delay board with variable resistor to control the timing to do this same thing!

Yep, I tried to add the variable delay circuit, but I couldn't find a relay that would work with as little as 1.2 volts. I havn't shelved the idea yet, I just need to research a little to see if there is another way.

Couldn't you use a transistors intead of a relay? I'm no expect but aren't transsistors like an electronic switch? :(

What car do you have that has dual speeds? Could you let me know the FCC ID on the back of the controller? I would like to compare that with the ZZ controller schematic.

Steve, I used a transistor switch on my mod, maybe you can use the same idea for yours, I basically use the 1.3v that drive the stock motor to close the transistor and send 4.5 volts to a pager motor.
