first we need to understand how a real clutch works (howstuffworks.com) friction disks could be made from dremel cut off wheels, we just need a mechanism to hook up and disconnect the friction plates... thats what i must ponder, if anyone has a HPI gas car i know they have a working clutch so that could be interesting to look at..

another aproach would be to use either a magnet or a micro hydrolic piston to push the main gear (the colored ones) off the pinion gear

it would probly be simpler to make a cetrifical(sp?) clutch like a gas powered rc car or a go cart uses might be hard to make the springs and shoes though.

a centrifugal clutch would be good, but go with a Centax type like on 1/10 scale tourning cars, they're adjustable. if you want to know how they work, pick up the August 04 edition of Radio Controlled Car Action (RCCA)
