5th cell location
 

First of all, please don't tell me to do a search. I have. I did a lot of reading on this board and others, but I still have a question.

I have read about the wiring in other topics, but I was wondering where the best place to mount the battery was? I want to it to affect the handling the least possible. I have seen it glued to the body roof in the center. Does this make the car more likely to flip?

how about mounting it over the rear wheels on the chassis?

do I need to move the side, stock batteries at all to offset the location?

while on the subject does moving the stock batteries make that much of a difference even before adding a 5th cell?

BTW, I feel a lot safer doing 5 cell than 6. I just don't want to rish buring anything out. Can someboday give evidence for just going ahead and doing a 6? I think the extra weight and battery location would hurt handling ecven more?

just by adding the 5th or 6th cell, you are adding weight. you don't want to mount it over the rear wheels of the chassis. it is near the motor pinion, so if something shifts, you will have some problems.

The best place that i can think of placing the 5 th cell is where the command lights are supposed to be. that would be most ideal place, because it least affects the handling, 'cause it is near the center. if you need more traction in the rear, you place it in the rear bumper. yes, you heard me right, the rear bumper.

on your question on the shifting the batts before the 5th cell. the answer is YES. more weight to the front help the back end loose traction faster, making power slides easier. or if you are really good, you can pull a drift. make the car turn harder. on a different note, i had to shift the batts to the front because AWD was not turning too tight.

on the question of the 6th cell. Yes, it is good. I have a 6th cell civic. no problems. BUT be VERY CAREFUL and make sure you insulate (did i spell it right?) your cuts and splices very well or you could end with a fried car. the lights will work with the 5th and 6th cells.

OH, before any work gets done, BE SURE TO REMOVE THE BATTERIES FROM YOUR CAR!!! i cannot stress this enough. i don't want to have to put with the guilt that someone'scar was fried cause of my advice!!! I have enough stress as it is.

with the power of the 6th cell space is very limited...it will end up where the lights are supposed to be.

BTW i forgot to add you will need to to get alloy or aluminum cups joints. more cell will just rip apart the cups joints. if it is just rear wheel drive, just the rear cup joints are needed....i have learned the hard way...

Shiporu's right about cup joints, as you'll need them eventually, but the stock ones will do. They will eventually will break, but it'll take a long time. The 6 cell won't burn out anything, but your servo will stutter, like SEs. I read over at atomic mods that the reason it does this is that the servo is correcting itself and is going too far. A tap of the throttle gets rid of it, but I have not heard of anything frying with 6 cells. I would suggest if you have a Dremel to mount the cells in your bumper if possible. I did it in my skyline, and it fits barely. This will put more weight over the rear end and will not interfere with any moving parts, so long as you tape the wires away from anything bad. It works well for me!

ive heard of light kits frying from extra cells, but i would mount it in the back for traction. just make sure to balance the car with the other 4 cells, put them in the middle for an AWD car or forward for a RWD. if you want an AWD car to stay planted in the corners put the extra cells in the rear and the other 4 in the middle. IDK about RWD though. if you want the car not to flip shave all of the mounts off of the rear bumper and glue the bumper back on. i also glued some velcro so i can remove my 2 extra cells if i want to.

I just took out the center screw mount and trimmed the bumper. Works like a charm, but I'm switching over to li-ons soon.
