New 6 Cell Idea!
Ok everyone, I just came across an interesting find. To my knowledge all of the 5 and 6 cell modifications have been done so far by simply adding on an additional AAA battery holder to the circuitry. If using NiMH batteries this would put the total supply voltage up to 6.0V (for 5 cell) and 7.2V (for 6 cell) with a charge capacity of ~750-800 mah. While browsing the web I found another possible way to get the same voltage, but with less storage capacity. Take a look at www.batterieswholesale.com and find the 2/3 AAA NiMH cells. They are the same diameter as a AAA yet only 2/3 the length. This means you could mod the stock battery holders to fit 2 of these 2/3AAA cell into each slot that holds one standard AAA cell. This would give you twice the voltage, but it would also reduce the capacity down to ~300 mah (for 2/3AAA). Hey, at a higher voltage and a reduced weight who knows if anyone would have the endurance to drive a rocket around for 25 minutes anyway. This will reduce run time, but will be worth it for the gains in voltage without the need to add extra weight. Hey Neuro, this would work great for your dragster project. You could even use the 1/4AAA cells for a single run.
Two problems exist with this method. The first is the fact these cells are not button top like standard AAA. This means they will have to be soldered together (a tricky thing that could damage the batteries) like 1/10 scale RC cars. The other problem is the way in which they will have to be charged. They can not be removed and simply placed into a Rayovac charger. A hobby grade peak charger designed for use with NiMH cell will be the only way to recharge these things. At any rate, I still think it is worth a shot to try this. I have already ordered my set of 1/2AAA and 2/3AAA. I will let you know how it turns out. |

The Team Orion is really good if you take off 10 turns, and even better if you do that and then run it on 7.2V. The acceleration I get with this setup is astounding. I've drag raced a 1/10th scale AWD pan car and killed him for the first 10 feet, until he could get his speed up and blow by me. Oh, and that was with me running four cells and him running six. Next time, I will also be running six cells, and I think the driver will be somewhat surprised when I pull on him for the first 10 feet, then continue to pull away... Stock, the Team Orion motor with only four cells and AWD is a killer combo on a road course. __________________ -- It is by will alone I set my mind in motion... OK HERE is the setup I have yet to try on my HB Two Tadiran AA lithiums. You can buy these batts at RS but they sell singly for 10.99 a piece you can also get from RS a Single AA bat holder. Now the voltage of the single tadiran AA alone is 3.6 Volts. 3.6 V + 3.6 is 7.2 volts the same voltage amount as the Team Orion Micro Elite Stock Motor. And it's only 2 AA's way less weight maybe this could work for that Drag project of yours. Sinistar |
