is heatsink needed?
im gonna buy the drift motor off my friend so i dont have to buy the whole stage 2 kit so i can start saving up for a real car. is the heatsink really needed? and if it is can i make a makeshift one?
|
I have borrowed my friends stage 2 drag motor before. I ran it W/O the heat sink. It ran great for about 10 min. and then it seemed to slow down. I put my stock motor back in and it runs fine after 10min. W/O the heatsink. I haven't used a heatsink yet but the guy at RS said it was a must so you don't burn out motors. He also said that the Stage 3 motors "That will be out in Jan 04" come with an extra heatsink because they burn out with heavy use and loose their ability to disapate heat. I don't know how this is possible but I'm sure someone around here does. Good Luck, PEACE

moooooooooo man:D :D

Meh, its not neccessary. I have been running my XMOD without a heatsink and it runs great. I don't notice much of a difference in terms of speed.

lol...ya those rs guys are pesky....when me and my dad went to go get my xmod they tried to cell us new cell phones, a dish, a prgressive scan dvd player and sum other crap. he spent about 5 minutes trying to sell us other crap. and dustin....mmmmmmmmmmooooooooo to u 2

I use a yellow stage 2 without a heat sink and I haven't noticed any slowdown problems. My engine does get pretty hot but I haven't had any problems.

i didn't get bothered but the rs guys where all bizy. and the seciund time i went it was with my friend so they figered we didn't have any cash

uh heaksink
Well believe it or not, someone here melted their chasis by not using the heaksink in the car. it was a stage 2 motor... But if you ask me, if you full-on burn out the motor 'till it gets hot, by racing too much in one sitting, then the heaksink is needed... but dor short runs, i am not sure...

Yeah, it could get that hot. I'm running the 8 tooth Stage 2 motor with IC-3 batteries, and when I finish a charge and pop the body off, the heatsink WILL burn my fingers like a soldering iron if I touch it. If you're just driving around your kitchen with lots of starting and stopping and time inbetween running, it might not get that hot. But if you're running full out in an oval or hi speed track, that mofo WILL get very hot, and I don't think RS would go to the trouble of including that heatsink in the package if it wasn't necessary.
You can drive a real car with no radiator fluid for short little hops, but if you take it out on the freeway you will blow your engine. Same deal. |
Viperkilla,
I meant to say "melted through the casis" Sorry about the misunderstanding.:D |
well that interesting
|
Well, some kid's XMOD went up in flames. IDK what happened, but its true, that thing got charred.

well heat sinks only work if they have a proper airflow through the fins and the more fins the better
plus a cooler motor runs better |
