Custom graphics Kit...at Walmart!?!
 

I checked out my local HobbyTown the other day looking for rims and custom decals and stuff...very dissapointed. Later I went to Walmart to pick up Matrix Reloaded. Then for some reason I decided to scope out their model section and found something very cool. They sell a "Testors" custom water slide decal kit for ONLY $5! It includes a mini-cd w/software, 2 sheets of special water-slide paper and some kinda adhesive to cure the decals once they are printed out. It lets you make side graphics and even custom license plates, plus if you register the software and pay like $10 or $15 it allows you to import your own .bmp or .jpg files too.

hey guys you know you can get decal sheets on the net right? and all you need is like paint or photo shop and a printer.

all you need is an ink jet printer. this site will tell you every thing you need to know.

I just came across this thread, it's kind of old, but I have to mention something. You can not print white from a normal inkjet printer. So it's hard to make decals for a lot of colors where white looks best. Also, I've used a normal printer to do decals like these, and they come out like crap. Don't waste your money.

If you really want to do custom decals, get a Dye-Sublimation printer, like the now out-of-production ALPS series, or one of a variety of small photo printers, like the ones sold by Sony. They're the ones that only print small photos, and will take input directly from a memory card, as well as a computer. Just make sure it's dye sublimation.

If at all possible, though, try to find the ALPS printers. They are still available on eBay. Not only can they print white, but they can print all kinds of ink, including printing foil, and can print on cloth, and other odd surfaces.

I never said anything about buying this kit. I did look at it one day, but like others have said, it doesn't work well on regular printers.

actually, it is a really good kit, but if you're not decided on your decals yet, make sure you do some printing... when you do finally make them, make sure you set your printer properties to the best quality print and paper type... i set mine to photo paper, so it really saturates the sheet. oh, drying time for ink should be 30 mins, and drying time for the decal bonding spray should be more than a day, unless you wanna apply your decals and watch the ink slowly drift away in the water...

also, the kit has two sheets, one clear and one white (LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE SHEET!!! you'll hate mismatching the sheets when it comes time to apply on a non-white surface...) so you can get white if you really need it...

hope this helps. it's a good buy to start, but you may as well just order the decal bonder spray and sheets from testors.com or decalpaper.com... (the program really sucks... didn't even work on my comp, and have only heard complaints elsewhere

i bought the kit and the program works well for me, i have not printed mine out yet. i figured out how to put my own images in the program with out upgrading the program. all you have to do is copy the image you want to place in and the paste it in the program after deleting the auto images they have. i hope my printer is good enough to print them at a high quality.

and for just the paper...
 

check your local wal-mart, cause you may be able to buy just the paper... i found a pack of 3 clear and 3 white sheets for $6... and i already had the spray from the starter kit...

Anyone try to clearcoat over one of these decals? I know some folks say not to do it, but I'm curious if there's some prep one can do to allow for it. I tried clearcoating a small piece of a decal I made to see if it ran, and it didn't (although I did use Microset to soften the decal and then as a brushover)
