Best performance options?
 

I’ve put an AWD kit on the R34 and I was wondering about some other things here:

1) Stage 2 motor w/ AWD. I hear its not such a good thing to do. I’m looking for more power, and looking at the specs of the stage 2 motors, it looks like I can still get better performance because of the different gear ratios. People say you can’t get enough torque out of the stage 2 motors to make them worth while, but can’t that be adjusted with the proper gear ratio? Seems to me like the “Drift” stage 2 set up (30k RPM w/ 6:1 ratio) would provide sufficient torque to drive the AWD set up. So, what’s the deal?

2) Suspension setup. I like the fact that the AWD system cuts down on wheel chatter and rear end skipping on high speed turns, but the stock setup isn’t providing good enough maneuverability. What’s the best suspension setup to increase maneuverability? Is it worth the mod?

3) Alternative energy source. I’m running on alkalines for the time being, but I don’t want to resort to buying the over priced rechargeable AAA batteries from Radio Shack. What’s a good brand to go with and where can I get them at? What is the best type of rechargeable AAA battery?

1. I run 4wd on my RSX with a Stage2 Red 9tooth motor. And it runs real nice

2. My current setting is BLUE (stiff) front, and YELLOW (medium) rear. This also runs very nice for me.

3. Get the charger/battery combo made for the xmods (only 24.99). You can't go wrong, considering that RS sells 4 of those 700mAh AAA's for 19.99 alone!! They last longer, run more effficiently than the alkalines.

sorry that was actually me posting, my little bro logged on his name and i didn't realize it.

for question 1 i dont have all wheel drive but the stage 2 motors put out plenty of torque. i'm useing the red gears and the white has quite a bit more power.

for number 2 i drive out side alot and to keep the car stable and to keep it from scratchingi use hard springs all around.

and for 3 i highly recomend the radio shack charger. its a great deal not over priced at all. and they have more power than alkalines

??? that makes it sound like u r using the white motor with the red gears.

oh well no i'm not. i ment that i'm running the red gears(and motor) but if you run the white gears and motor you get more power which i heard is needed for the all wheel drive

Cool, thats just the info i was looking for! I was thinking about getting the Supra instead because i'm a diehard Supra fan, but I couldn't resist the possibility of drifting an R34, and the Supra is a longer car and isn't as good for drifting (its pretty cool how the miniature counterpart inherits the same driving charactaristics of the originals, but go figure).

But couldn't I go for a different formula of rechargable battery to get a better performance? Like how LiMH (or is it NiMH) is better than NiCd. btw, what is the formula for the RS rechargable batteries, NiCd???

The Supra and Skyline Xmods use the same wheelbase, so the handling will be very similar with similar setups.

well, its nihm, lion, and li-poly... not sure on the charge rate on the rs batts, someone said it was a delta peak charger... not sure if it is, or what that means execpt its good....

it is a delta peak charger but i dont know what it means either

it means that it can take a partialy full or compleatly draned battery and charge it to its fullest limit.

It means you can charge a half-dead battery without worrying if you're gonna overcharge it.

no, delta peak detection is a method to determine when teh battery is full. actually, it's negative delta peak detection which means it looks for a voltage drop to shut it off. so say the voltage of the nicd cell was rising slowly as it's charged and it hits say...1.81 voltage. well, if the charger detects 1.80 or less it will shut off and go into trickle charging. for nimh, this method is not as good because in nimh, the drop is more subtle so chargers designed for nimh will use zero delta peak detection method which means if it senses that the voltage of the nimh cell being charged hovers at like 1.80 volts for a bit, it'll shut off cuz the moment it drops in voltage in any amount, it's overcharged. taht's why these RS chargers are overcharging nimh bit a very tiny bit since it only employs negative delta peak detection....but you probably won't notice the difference in runtime anyway...
