Just getting into epochs and...

What would u reccomend for me to start with.money isnt too big of an issue but i really dont want to spend over $120. i was thinking of getting it form tiny cuz of the free shipping over $100. also i saw some1 with either a boss 302 or mach 1 body i forget which , where could i get one? and about how fast do they go completely stock?

Nathan 08-06-2003 05:50 PM

Ever since i got my micro, I haven't touched my ecpoch:D

The speed is pretty good-runtime is the issue.

I have never seen a boss 302, check the shop here for the bodies epoch offers. The mach 1 is a spec-1 epoch, and they have shorter runtimes and speed than spec 2.

The Boss was a Snap Kit (model car) that was adapted to fit the Epoch. You can just go to the store and look for 1/43 scale model kits and measure them for L/W/H and wheelbase.

Stock Epoch goes around 7mph
4cell Epoch goes around 10mph
5cell Epoch goes around 13mph

If you're gonna get an Epoch, make sure and get a Spec 2. Tiny has most of the available body styles. You should get a set of soft springs for the front and rear of the car, though. Tiny doesn't have soft springs to my knowledge. You need to get them from Apexrc-racing.com. Also, get 2 sets of high grip, squishy tires. I say 2 sets because they come with 2 skinny for front, and 2 wide for rear. Put 4 wides on the car, and it handles very well.

I also put ball bearings in the front wheels on mine, but that's not an available hop-up. I did it on my own.

Here is a link to my ball bearing modification.

thanks for the info, ill prolly put o 4th cell in mine, but seeing as its a $80 car ill be a little nurveous about it.

The 4cell mod is a pain in the tail!!! (if you've not ever done it) Just remember to take your time, and do a good job so you don't have to re-do it later. Lay the parts out in order of how they came off, it helps me on re-assembly.

Also i kinda was wondering if epochs are better than mini z's. Mini z are more expensive so i was thinkin more about the epoch. How fast are stock mini z's? (plain not overland)

I JUST bought an Epoch Robot so i will keep this short and sweet because EVERY question ( and a few you havent thought of) ive asked someone else or myself.

1. Mini Z or Epoch - If your going to race somewhere other than your house get a Mini Z. If 80% of your racing will indoors...get an Epoch.

2. If you are curious..get a Spec 1. Although i will get a Spec 2 eventually i bought a Spec 1. You can find them for 45 shipped in various locations so if you want the "better version" later you can pick one up and still stay within the 120-130 mark.

Now question for Chelboed..can you pick up four cell packs anywhere online? For the first time i dont have the means to make them ( no iron...batts...etc...ARGH! I dont have anything since the move). Ive heard the Spec 1 cant fit four cells but im sure i can do it....ive done FAR more complicated work with RC.

1. For a while, you could buy them here. I got mine at apex rc, because they didn't have them here. The ones at apex are higher mAH. Always check with tiny first.

2. You need an iron to install them.

3. You can fit 4 cells in a spec 1, but you just need to add the 4th elswhere besides 'at the pack'. You can run a wire to it in a remote location on the car. Piece of cake. That's what I did when I ran 6 on my spec 2.

4. As soon as I bought my Mini-Z Overlands, I never touched the Epoch. I love those things. You can set up jumps, hillclimbs, desert racing off-road tracks, and all sorts of "3-D" tracks. When I went 3-D, I never went back to road racing. I know you weren't asking about overlands (robotgt), but I raced them all the time in my livingroom and loved them. I have never owned a racer, though. Don't think I would after having an Overland. I love to jump, and do donuts, and wheelies, and backflips, and hillclimbs...

They're fun.

While i havent owned a Overland...i would tend to agree in premise. Overlands sound like the way to go for off roading. Ideally...id like to own an Overland ( over a normal racer Z) and an Epoch.

I like a good race though...just a normal race with no surprises.

Id love a Subaru WRX that could go off road though.

Thanks for the info Chelboed. I saw a thread with the owner of this forum speaking of them...but when i checked they werent there.

I e-mailed you last night in regard to Spec 1 bodies Tiny but i forgot to inquire in regard to 4-cell packs. When or if you answer if you could let me know if you have then in stock i would appreciate it.

a lack of elsewhere

i have an Xmod (which is about the same size as a mini-z) and its hard to drive it indoors. This is mainly because its honestly 2 damn big to drive indoors, and the only rc smaller is the epoch. It seemed like, to me - that it was the perfect size to run indoors. But when i researched them alittle, they lack greatly in the areas of parts, motors, etc. (And micros are silly driving on a carpet) Any advice or ideas ?

I've got a epoch and xmod both are good,
but in limited space the epoch is aight.

it's pretty quick after the fourth cell and totally fun
