One shot turbo using a cap
 

Hey Guys,

Can anyone think of a way to hook up a capacitor in series with the motor when say reverse is pressed, but to have it out of circuit normally? Not sure how feasible this is, I'll have to do some tests to see if a capacitor could run the motor first of all. I don't know, just thinking but there's got to be a way to use a capacitor (versus a battery) with the original battery to make this thing have a one shot turbo boost.

i have a 2v campacitatory slightly biiger than stock battery

to get enough juice to effect it, you would need a huge capacitor that would totally slow the car down

having that said i dont think it is a great mod to do.

a cap can be charged to any voltage as long as the manufacturer's rating say it can handle that voltage. how long a cap can pump juice depends on the resistor and the cap itself. the time constant is calculated by R * C and since most caps that fit on the car have ratings in the micro farads, the time constant is not big enough for it to power the motor long enough for u to notice a speed change.

hmm true, I agree that its probably not feasible. However, what is an appropriate value of R to use? Assuming it was just the motor the cap was draining through... Perhaps a 3V cap could be like 3,300uF or so (I'll see what I have). Then T=RC would give... well still basically nothing. But maybe that little fraction of a second of boost at the right time could win the race. Caps don't weight that much at least, but they are large. I guess it isn't worth the effort. Originally I assumed that these little cars were powered by caps. Pretty foolish considering I'm a 3rd year electrical engineering student. (Doesn't say much for my school does it...)

i think its all the rotten cheese and french fries with gravy on it thats getting to you. but hey i thought this up before and was shot down by the weight thing.

well, caps really aren't that heavy, it's lighter than the cells anyway. you could try like a 1 MegaOhm resistor.....the longer it takes to charge up the longer it will last

Well I'm going to investigate tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I'll let you guys know how it comes along.

Sorry guys didn't try this out yet, got sidetracked dual celling and trying different motors. I spent 7 hours on my bit last night and ended up back running it stock. Well I did switch the motor from another car, but still. I also smoked two batteries.
