Booster: Buttons Hard to Push!

My friend and I picked up several Booster sets after dealing with the shoddy steering of the normal Bits. (5 Booster cars, all arrow straight)

The problem is the Booster controller buttons (pads) take a hard press to get them to respond. I've taken them apart and it's a simple series of seperated gold contacts, "bridged" by a small black puck underneath the direction of the pad you are pushing on. (4 pucks/contact sets per pad) The contacts are clean, and I hit them with a pencil eraser just for good measure, but it didn't help.

We are planning to attach sticks to the pads to give us better leverage, but if anyone knows of a way to make these switches more repsonsive, we'd love to hear it.
