Gearing for mini-x

So I'm about to undertake some fairly serious power mods for my mini-x, the list pretty much goes

N40H neo mags (check out Draconius at the mini-zracer site)
Squat BB can
PN-CR38 carbon brushes
Fet upgrade
8-cell pack using the new PN-racing 1.25V 780mAH batts.

Basically. with all these power mods, I'm pretty sure the biggest jump will be in the torque, since neo mags that are way more powerful than stock tend to increase torque but decrease rpms.

I was wondering what options I have for longer gearing for the mini-x to take advantage of all the extra torque and increase the top end and also gear it so it doesn't just wheelspin.

From what I've seen at the the parts shop here, the only option seems to be a 34t Diff. That isn't going to do very much is it? Can we fit a larger spur gear in there? I can't see that there's much room in the stock setup for it. And is 34t the lowest count for a mini-x diff? Wonder if it's possible to squeeze in a 11 or 12t spur? Any thoughts from anyone about the possibilities and options for gearing?

Wouldn't be too much fun to just have a huge increase in torque and no way to convert it to more speed.

Whoops, my mistake, I meant to say a 11 or 12t pinion, not spur gear. The stock pinion is an 8t. Anyone ever tried fitting mini-z pinions on the mini-x motor shaft? I know they have a greater selection of pinion gears.

Also wondered if anyone has tried rewinding a mini-x motor? The standard motor has 70 turns.

I have similar plans for my Mini X. Except I'm staying with the 6-cell battery.

I have the carbon brushes and Neo mags on order. I am going to be installing the motor bearing in the motor can ONLY, not the endbell, though. The front "hanger" bearing actually supports the armature shaft in front- the motor bushing in the endbell does virtually nothing.

I have wondered about the different pinion gears myself, but haven't investigated that out yet :)

I would say for sure the mini-z and mirco RS4 pinions will fit the shaft of the motor. However the front stock one is small and the rear one is normal size. i say its worth the few bucks for the try, definately keep us updated as to if this works!

bluemax_1 04-04-2003 06:59 PM

binaryterror, the front and rear aren't the same size?! Isn't the motor shaft the same all the way through? Oh, wait a minute, did you mean that the front one is a little short?

bluemax_1 04-04-2003 07:58 PM

BTW if anyone knows, just to clarify, the mini-x gears ARE 48 pitch right?

binaryterror 04-04-2003 08:10 PM

The length of the pinion is shorter on the front one.

Not sure on 48 pitch.

today in school i rewond the motor. only down to 50t but i still have to c if it works.

binaryterror 04-04-2003 10:06 PM

Cool...someday i'll try to rewind...from 70 to 50? why not try a good 60?

Either way let me know!!!

the gears appear to be 48 pitch but more round than the typical 1/10th 48 pitch, possibly because they are molded plastic and i was testing with 48 pitch metal gears.

Thanks binaryterror, will try out the mini-z pinion options. Probably between a 9-11t I'm sure the 9 will fit, not too sure about the rest though. Also, the few that I've come across larger than 9t seem to have an aluminum base with the lock screw. Anyone know where I might find just Delrin pinions in the 10t - 12t range? It looks like the gear for the front will have to be cut as there isn't quite enough room for the standard length, but the ones with the aluminum base like the Megatech 11t can't be cut short enough because of the base.

And turtle let us know how your motor turns out. I was thinking of getting an extra motor to try rewinding it too. After all they are pretty cheap.

I do know there are some mRS4 pinions, but i do not have access to those. Right now i am totally satisfied with my vehicle setup, except the springs, might change to mediums yet. The range i am getting with the stock location is actually quite amazing...tuesday i got over 25', and right now thats good for me. Working on painting some bodies i bought way back from tiny and never painted, the corolla has seen its life finally end! you judge!

I know the paint looks like crap, i let my little cousin paint it with me. His dad is a worthless human being, wouldnt even buy his kid a ZipZap...so i gave him mine, and my FnF kit.

binaryterror, thanks for the heads up. Completely forgot about mRS4 gears. Since the stock motor is a 180, the shaft should be the same size right? Hmmmm... hope the gear pitch is the same.

binaryterror 04-06-2003 08:45 AM

Not sure about pitch, but yes a 180 has the same shaft size as the 130 class motors.

gears

i have tried a couple of the mRS4 gears, and they have the right pitch but alot of them have too wide of a diameter. the press up against the crown gear too much and nothin moves. has anyone else tried anything.

It makes sense that the gearing on the Mini-X is done by changing the spur (diff gear) and not the pinion.
This is due to the limitations of a fixed shaft drive with no adjustment. To fit a bigger pinion, you will need to shift the motor in order to leave sufficient clearance for gear meshing, otherwise the gears will mesh too tightly and not turn, like you described.
