I HIT 10 MPH, then I hit something solid!

Hit a table leg at 10 mph. Hit so hard it popped the body off, also broke the steering (haven't pulled it apart yet to see how bad it is). Also broke the front of my Fast and Furious Eclipse on an earlier run in with the table leg (not full speed, before I found traction)

Ok, so here is the car:
Zip Zap Chassis
New Motorworks PCB
Motorworks steering setup (no suspension)
Hardwired Motorworks motor and pinion
3 Tomy nicads (cycled and matched like 1/10th R/C packs)
Motorworks rear tires
Hard ribbed front tires (from Microsizer tire set)
Red Zip Zap gears

I had a hard time getting this thing to hook up, no traction. So much torque it would just spin the tires and go sideways. I tried every tire I had, but no improvement. I found the traction secret, run the rear tires on sandpaper before each run. WHOA, that works, took off nice and straight!

Now the times:
(I timed runs over 20ft with a running start of about 5 ft.)
1.44 sec. 9.4 mph
1.31 sec. 10.4 mph
1.21 sec. 11.2 mph!
1.35 sec. 10.1 mph
1.29 sec. 10.5 mph
1.25 sec. 10.9 mph (then, CRASH, into table leg)

I hope the thing isn't broke too bad, I want to get some more runs with this! I will have to see if I can fix it this weekend.

SO, is this the speed record? Fastest posted speeds I have seen are around 8 mph. Please feel free to post if you have faster. No BS either, because then we would have to race!

sessiz10 03-13-2003 09:18 PM

Those are some excellent times. I once hit a wall full on and it snapped a knuckle. I hope it's nothing too serious that's a nice lil dragger you got.

sipsap 03-13-2003 09:22 PM

nice car man you should be proud....but i have a three cell shen that i think could hang but i dont have a lap counter to time my runs so i cant prove it
but i think there are some guys running around here with li-poly that would love to race for slips....

mobokseven 03-13-2003 09:48 PM

That is awesome. You should be proud. I haven't been able to measure the speed of my dual cell cars. And I can't imagine what bitzilla would turn.

hogjowlz 03-13-2003 09:55 PM

you got vids?

i could say that i hit 40mph hehe

if you hit 10.9 thats awesome. would be cool to see.

nrmcj 03-13-2003 09:55 PM

dude that's sick... my bit takes like 4-5 seconds 20 feet.... but of course the guts are stock :D

congrats man....

bdebde 03-13-2003 10:00 PM

Got vids?

Well, no vids yet. I only have a tape video camera and no video inputs on my computer. I will have to work on borrowing a digital vid camera or a vid capture device.

got BITS? 03-13-2003 10:31 PM

...annnddd yooouurrre neeew speeed freeek chammpppiooonnn bbbbdddeeebbbddddeee!!!!! Thats pretty damn good for a zip

ml22 03-13-2003 10:42 PM

wow

wow man that is off the hook fast. I would lo9ve to see a vid. My car goes 7.6 mph and I have done extensive work to it.... well time to add that 4th cell and go break 10 mph.

TypeZer0 03-13-2003 11:18 PM

my dual cell zip can do 20 feet in about 2 seconds (no official testing, just an estimate) and i'm working on my tricell zip so i could probably hit 20 feet in around 1.5 seconds

chelboed 03-14-2003 12:02 AM

Ok, have you TOTALLY missed the concept of 1/4 mile racing? This means no running start. How fast does it do the scale quarter from a dead stop? I feel ya on the traction problem. The sandpaper may wear out those grips of yours, I use spit on mine. :p I'm impressed with the top speed of your car. My 3cell zap goes from a dead stop in 1.9 seconds. You must be running a higher rpm motor than me, cause I get about 8mph with red gears. My quad cell Epoch only goes 10 mph. Did you check it on a treadmill, or just a bit of stopwatch guesswork? A tenth of a second is hard to see with a stop watch in hand. When I calculated my times, I used a time counter on a digital vid camera in super slo motion. See if you can borrow one. I would love to see the car that waxed my Zap.

Good job, man. I gotta do a 4cell mod now too. I feel my testosterone elevating. Grunt, burp, fart...:D

dustn 03-14-2003 12:52 AM

^ Precisely what I was thinking. Sheesh my Toyota Crapola would run the quarter decently if i got a 1/16 mile head start!

bdebde 03-14-2003 11:09 PM

Well, I just wanted to see how fast it would go. I did not get a chance to do any quarter mile times, because I broke it. After I fix it this weekend I will do some quarter mile times. I am going to make a light set up to get accurate timing. As for timing by hand, it can be off by a tenth, that is why I try to average about a dozen runs to allow for errors. The motor is the stock wired motor from the Motorworks car (white endbell 3.2?). I am also running taller tires which will increase top speed. I have an even taller set, but it will require chassis mod to fit them. I did time one standing 20 ft. (not scale 1/4 mile) at 1.71. Now, where was that thread on timing light (lap counter).

Here is a pic of the pro-stock mustang. I use a honda body when running it so I don't break the mustang body.

I got the thing fixed. One of the magnets popped of. It must have tweaked something, the steering is not the same. A little tweaking and tuning, added a second steering spring, it should be OK.

I got the lap counter/timer working, I just need a couple of mirrors to get the start and finish lines. I should be able to get some accurate times now. I will get some scale 1/4 mile (20.625 ft.) times, as well as some top speeds.

were did you get those cool wheels?

They are off of the new Motorworks car from walmart.

Silent_NightR34 03-17-2003 03:22 PM

dod u do this using the motorworks motor? and why do so many people use motor works pcb boards. do they let u use more voltage or somthing?

bdebde 03-17-2003 10:31 PM

It,s Official. I got the lap timer set up, and it turns out my stopwatch numbers were pretty accurate. I got a scale 1/4 mile (20' 7.5") time of 1.75 seconds, and a best top speed of 11.07 mph (running start). I only got in a few runs today because I did actually have to do some work at work today. I will post better numbers as I get them. Time to mod the chassis for the taller tires (more top speed). The lap timer was super easy, works great.
Here is the laptimer thread:

http://tinyrc.com/forums/showthread....&threadid=2198

Yes that is with the motorworks motor, imagine that. I used the motorworks board because it has a lot of torque. That means it will let more amperage through the circuit (maybe a little more voltage).

bdebde 03-18-2003 10:53 PM

I cut the chassis and dremmeled the rear wheel wells to fit the taller tires on the Pro Stock Zip Zap. It had little effect on scale 1/4 mile times, I got 1.77 seconds. The top speed did go up a bit, I hit 11.6 mph! I may drop down to the green gears to see if that improves 1/4 mile times (if it will hook up).:D bc36c

charliebrown 07-17-2003 09:52 PM

And that's all folks! lol ok I am impressed...I used to think that load would take away about .5 or 1 mile of speed, but now I realized that it cuts the speed in about half. So, my NX motor with the red gears actually goes at 3.5 mph, and if your car goes at 11.6, WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!

Anyway, I'm posting tips for those who wanna improve their car speed a LITTLE bit:

Keep your tires clean and make sure they have good traction. no grip on the road can sometimes be the cause of flip outs.

use a low gear ratio. A yellow NOS nitrous (I prefer to call it NOS instead of turbo) paired with red gears can actually surpass the NX motor with the blue gears.

Don't use motors higher that 30,000 rpms if you're using dual/tri cells. The motor will get fried with the high rpms and voltage, kinda like when Vin Diesel in F&F said, "So as long as you don't do any granny shifting, that hundred shot of NOS won't blow the welds on the intake" Yada yada.....

Oh, and try racing without the shell and front tires. They only add load to the car.....and without the shell, it won't look too attractive, but it will go faster. This also goes for wheelie bars, any silly putty, external batts (try the Layman's batts, available at RS), etc. You could remove the pcb cover for less load and more oxygen for the circuits.

One more thing: FULLY CHARGED batts can increase speed because of more energy.

Oh, and NEVER try to use ACTUAL nos on your car lol

If you follow these speedy tips then you may be the speed record holder one day! Who knows?

Heres my setup for the Fastest Car

pent-cell

phast motor

mosfets

3.43:1 gearing

XXX soft rear tires

XXX hard front tires

(no I havent built it yet, but I will :D )

JesterDotcom 07-18-2003 04:46 PM

i have gotten my dual cell zipzap with red gears and a 3.4 motor up to 9.3 m.p.h

charliebrown 07-19-2003 09:15 PM

JesterDotCom, what did I just say???? Don't use 3.0's or higher with dual/tri cells!!! Except for maybe the Phast motor, since it has enough torque to handle higher voltage....anyway, try using a Layman's dual celled phast motor with the 3.43 to 1 gears and that should go at about 20 mph WOW did I just say a way to get a faster speed?????? remember, this is my idea so don't steal it and try to take the credit, you may get banned in the attempt! lmao

charliebrown 07-19-2003 09:19 PM

BTW bdebde, can you show us the guts of the car??

bdebde 07-19-2003 10:19 PM

Here is a pic without the body. You can see the fronts of two of the batteries. There is also a battery in the stock location. You can also see the dual magnet single coil steering from the motorworks. I did the coil myself, made it wider to reduce the steering travel. Slight course correction under full speed, without wiping out, during the 1/4 mile is possible with a tap on controller.

those wheels look like they came off a semi truck or something. dey r so GAY!

charliebrown 12-23-2003 04:59 PM

Not exactly.....I think those wheels are kinda cool!

Anyways, you said the motorworks PCB allows more torque, and bascially you used mostly motorworks guts......steering, motor, pcb.....

I'm thinking of getting the Motorworks car alone, and I was wondering if a Layman's tricell/quad cell would fit. That would be some fast (censored)!!!!!! Thanks bdebde.

I'm kinda amazed this hasn't been moved to Bit Science......

Chuckster...

Snake Mod 02-23-2006 08:59 PM

This post is very old i know. I really love motorworks. I think this is one of my favorite threads i've read. i love the picture of that one r/c car with mainly motorworks stuff in it. I think the knowledge in this thread is very interesting..

Thanks :o :o
