Banked Turn Prototype

1 Attachment(s)
My end goal is to have an oval with banked turns. I have a couple of zip-zaps that are getting too fast to run on a flat track.

This, being a prototype, is taped together. Now that I have the dimensions for all of the pieces I am going to make two of them. I will also make a couple of straights.

If I get a chance I will post some video of the testing that I am about to do with the cars.

Here are some photos...

WOW!!! I didn't know a banked curve would be THAT BIG!!! I hopd your cars can go fast enough. Great job.

PWalk 02-27-2003 09:25 AM

Speed-D,

Is it possible for Bit's to run on such a steep bank? In my experience with these cars they would just slide down to the infield.

It looks great though, keep up the good work.

Speed-D 02-27-2003 02:17 PM

If your cars are fast enough it is possible to run on this turn with this banking. My cars have no problem with it. I am still refining the arc and degree of banking for some parts of it though. The cars don't run as smoothly as I'd like on parts. This is just a prototype for me to get the measurements correct. When I have it figured out I will post pics and some video of my cars running on it.

That's a sweet job you've so far! What kind of material are you using, if you don't mind my asking?

Keep up the good work... and can't wait to see a vid!

Speed-D 02-27-2003 02:57 PM

The base and supports are made out of black foamcore board. The track surface is the back side of some black mounting board. Both of these have the surface texture of conctruction paper. On the final version I do I will use hot glue to hold it together instead of tape.

nice but do you have NASCAR cars? If not it would look REALLY strange!:D   :p

I wanted to do this, too, tell us how it turns out!

i've made banked turns on one of my tracks ( the rally one) and i did it a little differently, i really like your idea(with a few slight changes) mine are made out of cardboard and you just cut a really flat 'u' and slap that on a turn, then your banked turn has a bit more slope to it and its a bit less rigorous for design, mine work great ( my 350Z goes fast enough to ride off the banking walls and its at least a 45 degree angle at the top.... i love em you can tear into the corners and fly into a straightaway absolutely wicked)the supports you have under the turn i couldnt really tell but are they perfect right triangles? if they are you should curve the hypotenuse of the the triangle so your turn has more (at least a little curve to it) or maybe that was what you were going for(just a thought if you'd like it;) ) i'm gonna go copy your layout now for my next track:p do you mind;)

Speed-D 02-28-2003 10:42 AM

Please do copy it. It's not copywrited. I would like to see what other people can do with it. I have changed it a bit since I took the pictures. I lowered it in short chute, but I kept the corners at 30 degree banking. It has an arcing curve to it. Now my cars travel around it very smoothly. Although it has taken some practice to find the right driving line.

I am hoping that in the next week I can get another one built then put them together for a full oval.

Here is the video of my modified test track with a car running on it. It is a big file (11MB) so it will take a few minutes to download if it works.

Test Banking

midget_man1387 02-28-2003 10:42 PM

nice, no offense, as a tip, you should no have a dip in the corner(or even a starightaway)

Speed-D 02-28-2003 11:02 PM

Well, the dip I think you are right about. But the cars run better with it there, so it stays. As far a straightaway goes the shape of this track is going to be similar to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. IMS has small straights in between the corners. Those straights have been dubbed "short chutes". If I get this one right I am going to try a tri-oval next.

Even if it is not accurate it is fun to drive on and a nice change from a flat track.

Post some pics of your banked turn if you have any. I'd like to see it.

midget_man1387 02-28-2003 11:09 PM

I don't have a track, I juss said I wanted to do it

Speed-D 02-28-2003 11:17 PM

oh.

got BITS? 03-02-2003 08:21 PM

Can you possibly post templates when your done. I'm a big Nascar fan too. I wanna make a tri-oval bristol of sorts. lol

Speed-D 03-02-2003 09:07 PM

When I get finished I will post all of the measurements and parts that I used.

-v2oracle- 03-06-2003 11:36 PM

once i finish my downhill course, i'm giong to concentrate more on the huge grandprix style track i have designed and then i'm going to get right into the banking curves ( and i know what you mean with the dip in the corner, it does help with the cars, you can fly at the corners and fly out of them, i love it:D

PWalk 03-07-2003 10:20 AM

I can't seem to get the vid working. Any suggestions?

Speed-D 03-07-2003 11:23 AM

You might want to right click on it and "save target as". It will take a few minutes to download.

PWalk 03-08-2003 01:53 PM

Got it, thx

runs nice

midget_man1387 03-09-2003 01:54 PM

pwalk, where'd you put the vid on? (URL)

rrvbl 03-10-2003 10:38 AM

Looks sweet!!!

As a tip for your video, try adding more light to the room.

MBLP 04-15-2003 05:16 AM

Nice work!! Why don`t you make a "How to" about this fat ass curve??? I have been thinking about building one too;)

ib311 04-22-2003 12:04 PM

impressive work.

midget_man1387 05-13-2003 02:51 PM

here is a link to my banked turn ghetto-fied track!!

eman1 07-06-2003 06:43 PM
