Gun sound mod!!!

I got my T34 and Panther last week. I already made a mod. Using a voicemail greeting card.
I wanted to add a gun blast while firing... so i did:)
You'll be able to record your own gun sound with this and trigger it with the controller.
Works perfectly! Adds a lot of exitement to the battle :D
(disclaimer)
If you try to do this you will need some electronics experience. Don't blame me if you fry the controller.

Plenty of room in the controller :)

Okay i get it now:D

Used a 6 volt relay to seperate the sound pcb signal and the trigger signal.
The (right) trigger must be removed of the controller and connected to the + side of the battery
and the + of the relay.
The switch contacts of the relay are connected where the trigger connections used to be.
The other contacts of the relay are used to trigger the sound pcb.

The right trigger is connected via the relay to the sound pcb.
Sqeezing the trigger will play the gun sound and the tank will recoil as normal.
The relay is needid to isolate the sound pcb from the normal trigger signal.
That's it for now. I hope you like it.

jayd177 02-22-2003 09:35 PM

That is pretty damn cool. It looks like that speaker fits right in there like it was at home or something. That's cool.

Meltdown 02-22-2003 09:43 PM

Thanks, i'm having a blast with it.:D :D :D

Meltdown 02-24-2003 07:38 AM

Just modded my second controller. The nice recording feature allows me to change the
gunblast sound on the second controller.
So you hear wich tanks shoots due to their distinct sound.
Now i will look into adding a gun flare while shooting using a yellow led in the gunbarrel.

Napalm_Guru 02-25-2003 03:47 PM

Looks sweet, but im waiting for the "sound pod" that Helix mentioned earlier.

Namuna 02-25-2003 03:54 PM

Great stuff Meltdown! Thanks!

Meltdown 02-25-2003 05:13 PM

Just added the gunflare mod.
I will make a new thread for it with scematics and photo's when all is documented.

hyperdriveb 02-25-2003 05:20 PM

Nice work

I was just thinking about that...

My idea is using multiple LEDs and a 555 timer to make a explosian effect when you shoot. the power to the LEDs can be routed from the IR LED in the turret to recieve power.

And I was planing making a hole in the barrel to let light out.

Please explain your idea.

Meltdown 02-25-2003 07:02 PM

Only thing needed is a BC547 smd transistor and a 2ma LOW CURRENT led.
The power of the Ir led alone won't do i tried.
The transistor will be triggered by the Ir led.
The transistor and led will be powered by the power cells (2.4v) inside the tank.
I already made it work great but i have to get me a smd transistor because
there's no room for the normal size transistor i used to experiment.
Full explanation will follow.
It's great to pull the trigger... the gun goes off with sound and flare while the tank recoils.
I'm loving this stuff! :D

Racemonster505 02-25-2003 07:43 PM

meltdown are you planning and kits to sell so us (non-eletric) types can have a great mod?

Meltdown 02-25-2003 07:59 PM

I'm afraid that these mods are a little to involved to non electric people :( Sorry.
You will have to have more than average solder skills to pull these off, especially with smd stuff. The nature of these tanks makes them hard to mod because there's so little room. I'm a tech guy who has a smd solder station, lathe, build my own computer controlled mill and computer controlled telescope. These skills come in very handy for these mods. I feel for the non tech guys over here and wish i could help them. I would if i could. You could all come to holland and visit me for a mod and battle all day :D

Gun Flare mod

Any further info on the gun flare mod? How did it turn out?

Kadettcab 03-27-2003 03:11 AM

@Meltdown:Where do you live in NL? You Know the Problem I have. Do you think you can help me?

Meltdown 03-27-2003 03:51 AM

Yo Kadettcab

I live in purmerend. It's 20km above amsterdam. Your problem seems to be of a more serious kind. I will help you ofcoarse if i can. Don't you have any warranty left? If you do it's best to send it in and get it replaced. If not than you can contact me off list using my profile to send me private email.

Alard
I will post the gunflare mod when time permits.
I've been so buisy lately...well you know.

Alard 03-27-2003 06:38 AM

Gun Flare mod, etc.

Thanks for the reply, Meltdown. Also am a tech guy. Have many ideas for modifications. Was thinking of using a light pipe for the cannon, with an LED in the turret for the gun flare. The pipes are available here .125" x 1.2". Then the LED could be surface mount or thru hole type.

When I get the chance, I will decode the tank and controller IR signals. This would allow to build a stand-alone decoder, which could make cannon sounds, etc. Structures could then be devised, that would respond to cannon attack.

Napalm Guru,
What sound pod?

Thanks,
Alard

Napalm_Guru 03-28-2003 03:51 PM

Helix describes it best here.

wow, alard, that woul be awsome to have houses, and bunkers that responded with the tanks! it would also be cool if you could make a buker that randomly fired. It would take combat to a new level!

Alard 04-08-2003 11:40 AM

Gun Flare mod, etc.

Still interested in how you did your gun flare mod, Meltdown. In particular, where did you put the LED and how did you wire the transistor?

I'm thinking of fabricating a new barrel from 3/32" or 1/8" styrene tube. Then using 1/16" or 3/32" acrylic rod as a core. The acrylic rod is available in clear, flourescent red, orange and green. The LED would be mounted inside the turret, the acrylic rod would conduct the light flashes through the barrel.

Haven't tried any of this yet. Need to do some experimenting.

After the gun flare mod is completed, will try to decode the infrared signals from the transmitter and the tank cannon. Hope to use that for external sound generation.

Meltdown 04-08-2003 11:55 AM

Sorry for the late reply Alard!
I'm on tour with my band right now so i'm not at home.
But i've got my powerbook mac with me :-)
I will be back this weekend. Then i shall post the info next week. Also looking forward to the Ir decoding. Should be awesome. Later.

Gun flare

How about...small bore hole in barrel...fibre optic passed through...small led connected in some way to signal from fire/recoil connector on tank pcb...does this sound like sense?

Meltdown 07-14-2003 06:53 PM

Yeah, that's the way i did it. I used a (very cheap) nylon E string for acoustic guitar as a fiber. This gives the best result. Much better than fishing wire due to the purety of the guitar string. Problem is that the electronics on the pcb won't allow you to drive another led. It will fry your pcb!!. I had to use a little cell and smd transistor to power the super strong white led i used.

arch2b 09-19-2003 11:14 AM

curious to see the details of this mod, what became of this thread....
