Suspension

What kind of suspension gives you the best turning? The different suspension arms you can buy, springs, or no suspension at all.

SuperFly 02-28-2003 12:32 AM

I've done spring mods and tried all the available suspention arms, and I like the stock white suspension arm the best for the track I race on. This is true for the chassis/body combinations I use, but I could see where a spring mod or no suspension could be useful to solve a particular problem. I honestly couldn't see any improvements with any of the red tuning kit suspension arms, and the stock white one fits better.

zclonedude 02-28-2003 11:25 AM

I race on a pretty slick basement floor, I've found NO suspension arm works best for me.

strider_mt2k 03-02-2003 09:21 AM

For my high-speed cars, I like a softer type I ZZ or MS Stabilus.

For my dual cell, the truly independant suspension of springs works the best.

Gent 03-04-2003 01:12 PM

I have found that putting springs on the front on my car helped to keep it from flipping over on turns.

SuperFly 03-04-2003 11:13 PM

One thing I would add is that in my experience, the front tires have way more to do with turning performance than the suspension.

I race on a fairly slick surface with pretty large radius turns, and NO front tires (just the bare wheels) allows me to run a formula 34 motor with green gears almost full out and gives just the right amount of control. It seems like even the hardest tire compond gives too much grip, causing oversteer and the back end spinning out.

Dougboy 03-07-2003 09:52 PM

on hard wood, the lxx suspension works great cus it's so soft. adding hard suspension just creats understeer.

ReD RiDeR 03-10-2003 08:29 PM

wheres every one get these cool magical hard to find springs. i want some but cant find any.

zclonedude 03-11-2003 07:49 AM

WA-LA heres the magical link http://tinyrc.com/qfm/racing/store.htm

Gent 03-11-2003 11:11 AM

If you don't want to purchase springs from a store, try using springs from a "clicker pen" (basically any pen the clicks on and off) Some of those pens springs won't work, because the magnets on the car will be attracted to them, and you won't be able to steer, so you might have to try several different kinds of pen springs. The springs I ended up using came from a 4 color pen that had 4 springs inside. I then trimmed the springs to make them fit on the car. If you have any questions on theis let me know.

If u want stuffer suspension & wanna save ur $$ - turn the std white arm upside down

ReD RiDeR 03-12-2003 03:16 PM

zclonedude thanx for the site.

gent thanx for the pen idea.

keen i tried that already bro thanx any way.

whatdo the springs do any way no one ever really told me? they just told me that they worked miracles on their car and to get some. help is greatly appreciated.:)

re: springs

Are the springs actually small enuff to go on instead of over the wheel struts? (if u know what I mean)

- what keeps the springs in place??

Gent 03-13-2003 03:07 PM

- Keen, the springs are small enough to fit over the struts, but if you use springs from a pen you'll have to cut them to fit, because you don't want them to be to stiff.

- ReD RiDeR, the springs help to stiffen up your front suspension, which does two things: 1- It can help keep your car from flipping over when you are driving fast and turning, because it does't allow you to turn as sharply. 2- The springs help to eliminate the bounciness or chatter of the front end on certain uneven driving surfaces, like carpet.

Hey Gent,

Isn't there always something strange afoot at the Circle K? lol

Gent 03-14-2003 10:34 AM

ReD RiDeR 03-14-2003 02:43 PM

oooooohhhhhhhhhh. I get it now thanx Gent.:)

I run a no tire special edtion bit, turns purrrrfect, until i started messing with dual steering springs, then the magnet fell out. i exopied it back but its never been the same... :( anyplace to get real bit char-g steering arm/magnet in usa?

also dont ask me why i messed with the stupid spring i am kinda sore about that one

SuperFly 04-16-2003 06:30 PM

vtheo-

I just got a nakamichi racer on eBay for $1.50 + $3.00 shipping. The minute I received it, I tore it apart. You get a NICE set of wheels already mounted on compatible knuckles and rear axle, some dual nimh batteries that could be used for a nice internal dual cell, and a steering arm with spring that seems like it would be compatible (haven't tried it yet). I've seen several of these on eBay recently. Just bid on the cheapest car you can find on eBay and use it for parts.

vtheo 04-17-2003 06:17 PM

I have a stripped clone just for parts, the steering on the clone was very bad(motor was fast tho:) ). I tried that steering arm... it was bad on the bit too. Anyone know a place that you could get a bit/microsizer steering arm. I have heard that nothing steers like a bit/microsizer, and the limited expeirence i have with clones they are right. i took off the dual steering spring, its better but it is realy tight one way and realy wide the other :(

edit

dual celled??? or just a battery that would work with the stock batt of a bit or clone

cowfish_29 04-21-2003 06:06 PM

I dont have steering springs, but i find that the QFM ones are good for high speeds but on rough surfaces going slow they make friend's car bounce around.
I like the softest red bit stabius b/c it gives enough "squish" between the front wheels to make the turning smooth and have the front slip out a little bit (a good thing with fast motors)

Whenever i use no suspension at all, my car's reaction time and steering is REALLY bad. Most of the time i forget to put one in and then i think i broke something :)

DraGula 06-07-2003 03:33 PM

i got my springs off a broken walkman tape player, they were right inside, but I needed a screwdriver to pull them out with. they fit right on the steering knuckles and cut perfectly into two.

midget_man1387 06-18-2003 12:56 PM

how long should the springs be?

I've had tons of problems with bit/ms steering. QFM or RCmod probably has the parts your'e lookin for. I think nothing steers like a Thunder Charger ;) (You can get them for $5 at BigLots in the Toy Section)
