Alternate Booster Button

1 Attachment(s)
I'm not sure if this is "BIT SCIENCE" or not, but I don't like the right handed booster button on the Bit Char-g's, so I figured out a REALLY cool alternative for the button placement. I recently purchased a Nissan 350z and 2-cell'd it (had the Layman 3 cell, but the std 2 is more powerful). Anyway, I decided to put in an alternate booster button that I can operate with my left thumb without taking it off the forward button.

Step 1.
Crack that baby open and find the booster button that comes on the standard controller.

2. You will see two solder points on the other side of the board where the button is attached.

3. Solder one wire on each point and run them around the bottom edge of the controller (on the inside).

4. Find a 'normally open' button that is about the same size as the ones in your controller already. I got mine from the forward button of my old clone controller.

5. Drill a hole in the top right hand corner of the forward/reverse pad that you push to operate the controller. Be sure to make the hole just barely big enough for the round part of the button to poke through the pad, and make it far enough away from the corner so the button will fit the underside of the pad.

6. Glue the button into the pad with the round part poking through the pad from the back side to the front. (be sure you don't get glue on the shaft of the round part)

7. Solder those 2 wires to the button. (the button comes with 4 legs you can cut one set of them off so they don't get in the way).

8. Push the remaining legs against the underside of the pad so they don't short out the solder points on the board. I left the legs pointing downward.

9. Put it all back together and try it out. You can push the pad in the forward position and then catch the "Alternate Booster" button with the end of your thumb when you need it. I can even reach it with the same thumb using reverse. (even more comfortable for me than the right handed orig. button.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

My microsizers came with a 20+ inch antenna on the Tx. My Bit Char-g came with a 14 inch antenna. I had a spare MS Tx laying around, so I switched the whole reel and now I have a long antenna. The bonus is that Now I have a complete grey/black color scheme that matches the car.

awesome mod.. very creative. ^^:D

Thanks, I dunno if I'm just dislexic cixelsid, or have a left/right brain thing going on, but the right hand boost just sucked for me.

isk8blind 02-09-2003 09:02 AM

dude thats a pretty sweet mod!now instead of missing the boost button up on top since you cant see it you can just slide your finger up SSSSSWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nghts 02-09-2003 01:42 PM

it looks like a greaT idea...but I dont really understand how it would work

nrmcj 02-09-2003 02:44 PM

sweet idea!! that's gotta be one of the smartest things anyone has done! now to get my booster... :D

basically just rewire the button rite?

It works exactly like the other boost button.

The way the stock controller works is like saying you need to have two gas pedals in your car. Why not control the speed with just one hand.

In all reality, both buttons work. You just have the option of controlling the speed (boost) with the same hand that you make it go forward and reverse. You don't alter the function of the origional button, you just add one.

Trust me, it rocks!!!

does any1 still put things in the tips&mod area?anyways this is hot..i gotta try it soon

chelboed 02-09-2003 07:01 PM

I'm sorry, I didn't even think about it. Hey maybe Namuna will do it. Can I move it from here to there?

chelboed 02-09-2003 07:05 PM

I thought I'd add this as an afterthought...

The button I used for the booster is slightly taller and easier to push down than a button out of a MS or Bit controller. It's a clone controller button. It requires just slightly less pressure than the forward button, so if I want to take off fast, I just push the booster button. This makes it compress first then the forward button compresses. Kinda like a double action.

I probably confused more of you than I just helped. I think I am beginning to have an anxiety attack myself.

Gotta go...

:D Great mod on the booster controller. I just got my 350Z and still have yet to perfect the boost button. I might try your idea; except I am not too talented in the mod department.

chelboed 02-09-2003 10:57 PM

The mod is easy, just take your time. The hardest part about the mod is routing the wires. Make sure you run them down to the bottom of the controller, over, then up to the button. I also noticed that if you leave your charging dock in the controller, you will need to shave the back off a little. I took my dock out because I use external charger anyway. I don't have any single cell cars anymore.

By the way, I noticed immediate results in ability to control the boosting.

well i was wondering if its possible to make a turbo button.Because your mod is still the same.u still can push go and push the "turbo button". When its really like a nitrous. I want to make it a REAL turbo like when you push Go the "turbo" button is depressed at the same time u push go or reverse. Then it works like a real turbo.

XeroGT-R 02-09-2003 11:56 PM

but then you cant use it as a "NOS" So it would be up to the person. Turbo or NOS? TOUGH CHOICE! hehe

XeroGT-R 02-10-2003 12:02 AM

another reason why i want to not have to push the "turbo button" is because people say its cheap or some crap like that and if i made it in a true turbo way then people wont know! ^_^ mwhahaha! O ya i kinda made a stupid mod. its called the easy grip button mod. Its really easy to do. all you gotta do is hot glue the edges of the button and wait for it to dry out. just put a line thats not too thick of a layer for the forward, reverse, left, right button parts.then when u use it u can do quick reactions and improve your driving. you dont hav to worry about slipping off a button. it also feels compfy. but u can always do the button mod at qfm.

Sure, just add in a small slider switch and you can just have it on or off. When it's off, you can use the boost button. The way this is set up though, you can push the go button and then boost, OR you can push the boost button hard enough that it will depress both buttons at the same time.

If you mean it's "cheap" like in cheating, then tough cookies, man. The boost car is not really much faster than a normal car (like 4%). The awesome thing about a boost car is that you can pump it up so much and still drop the boost and still have it controllable in the curves. If you want to "boost your car and not let anyone know about it, read about the Layman's 2-cell mod. (very discrete)

alright thanx for everything chelboed!

How is the reception on your Fairlady?

Mine is getting worse.

-v2oracle- 02-11-2003 02:05 AM

my fairlday is the best outta my collection right now for sure, i put a 3.4 darkside rotor v2 in it and on a single cell off boost it still maintains a good speed, reception is excellent and when i hit boost it is the fastest thing on my track during my grandprix's:D
i dont remember if i took a crip cap off my 350Z, check to see if there is one to remove if you havent done so already......or maybe that was my other car...:p

chelboed 02-11-2003 09:42 AM

I took the crip cap off the car just like on the QFM site. It looked identical. 1 day later, I fried my PCB. I'm so pissed. My car is 4 days old. I don't think they have a crip cap. The thing I took off was important, though. I was back to the Layman 3 cell.

May she R.I.P.

I don't know if anyone had this idea yet but how about getting a flip switch (one of those switches with a stick) for the boost button so it's like a shifter?

:P
