Drifting

What are some of your setups for drifting? I am still testing to find good drift setups.

Racer9 01-17-2003 12:09 PM

Sliding around corners. It is really awesome!:D

hogjowlz 01-17-2003 12:21 PM

high torque motor. rare earth magnet. thats the essentials i guess. harder tires for more slippage.

do figure eight donuts count as drifting?

Racer9 01-17-2003 12:29 PM

not really

BabyKiller 01-17-2003 01:30 PM

umm earth magnets are they steering magnets?

PWalk 01-17-2003 01:47 PM

You aren't going to win a race without knowing how to drift.

I find the best setup is to have a set of super hard tires, and no higher than a 2.6 motor. I keep the stock gear set in there (orange for the newbies) as it seems they give you the best all around performance on a short track.

Racer9 01-17-2003 01:49 PM

BabyKiller

What does that have to do with drifting?

tomahawk0101 Yeah I am and I'm proud of it! :D

hogjowlz 01-17-2003 01:51 PM

stronger magnets = better steering = better control

Racer9 01-17-2003 01:56 PM

Drifting doesn't require a whole lot of steering.:D  :p

hogjowlz 01-17-2003 02:09 PM

so you just go straight and magic makes you spin around the corner?

hogjowlz 01-17-2003 02:16 PM

i read it on some site once that said it is being able to control a car while the rear end is spinning. its pretty much a way for kids to pretend that their car is tough.

MTL 01-17-2003 03:21 PM

omg, how many times has this been said by me "u cant drift a bit, you can only powerslide"

its still impossible to do WHAT u want it to...im an aggresive driver...i countersteer alot and like to "get sideways" ...not necessary just using the "power over" techniuqe to simply oversteer...
drifting, as it probably has been stated here before, is "controlling your car through a series of turns with little to no traction"...and the series of turns is what separates it from drifting, and just sliding around and then stopping to do it again...make a track and attempt to drift on it in one run with your tires spinning with no grip, and ill give u props...
and i say its "lame" to drift a bit, because its NOT drifting, even though everyone has their own beliefs on what drifting really is.

i couldnt agree more with MTL. First u need understeer and to get out of a controlled drfit u need counter steer and bits dont have proportional steering....second you need power over and the bit just cant handle that....
Racer9- STEERING IS ALL U NEED!! and suspension!! not HP!! hte most HP ive seen on a drift car is the 430hp Silvia by HKS and the 700HP JUn supra.....

Racer9 01-17-2003 04:22 PM

Alex

What the heck?

sex: Yes please! :D

Kajoq 01-17-2003 05:01 PM

*cough* The reason none of the drift cars have that much HP... Is because once you start to get that much power, drifting becomes SLOWER than actually navigating a corner. Go watch Le Mans... Formula One... GT series, You dont see these guys drifting because it would slow them down. Im not saying drifting isnt cool to watch, Just that its not necesarrily the fastest way around the track

Racer9 01-17-2003 06:07 PM

Actually drifting some helps their lap times.

nrmcj 01-17-2003 06:54 PM

ehh, im inclined to agree wtih MTL and alex.... the highest powered drifting car IS prolly the jun supra.. while an evo 7 could prolly pull it off at 600-800 (retarded) hp... the supra only drifts not b/c of skill, it's simply overpowering the tires to the point of them burning out...

i learned to drift in vancouver in a 240sx with an s13 engine in it... pushed to about 250 hp... ABOUT.... i was really crappy at it cuz i would panick and just let go of the gas, but then i realized the sides of the track were padded really well... i got a lot better, but nothing like the ultra-drifts japanese drivers pull in the mountains, just 90 degree corner drifts...

heh, back home in icy, snowy edmonton i can drift a 165 hp subaru.. but only on snow. ONLY.. on snow... :D

and drifting IS faster, but only on the corners that you have to slow down for... thus, in shallow curves and HIGH speed corners, drifting is just for show. (drifting bits is VERY close to impossible... you can do something that Looks liek a drift but it's not ^_^)

arceeguy 01-17-2003 08:51 PM

I can't!

I probably don't know the real meaning of drifting! My cars just do donuts if I try to initiate a "drift". Is a drift the same as a "power slide"?

nrmcj 01-17-2003 09:15 PM

http://force.chat-jp.com/movie/

that's for all the pple who are new to japanese racing :D

cowfish_29 01-17-2003 09:17 PM

drifting IS possible. Its so hard it takes me forever to do correctly, but its possible. here it is, step by step for a smooth racetrack.

i use stock magnets, because the RE ones give too much power.
i use a 3.0 with orange (if its reaalllyy slippery, teal) gearing. I use a soft front stabius (it lets front slide out enough) and bit RACER softs on front and bit CHAR-G on the front. This lets the back AND front slip, not just the back. If only the back slips, then donuts happen.

now the hard part.

Since there is no differential or 4wd, the car is very inconsistent. it will completely freak out and spin if you tap the edge of the track or simply hit a less/more grippy part of the track.

actually drifting: IMPORTANT: get going near top speed on at least a good 2.6 motor. (since the car is not proportional, if you try to drift before you hit top speed the car just spins out). Now, start turning, and as SOON as you can see your car starting to slip, or even slightly before (if its slippery) let go of the turning, and let the car slide ever so slightly sideways.
after about 3/4ths of the turn, either let go of the accelerator for a tiny split second to let the car regain traction but not stop, or if you need to (you often do), tap the steering slightly the opposite direction to straighten the car out.

If you are doing multiple turns at once, it can get sticky. try to let your car regain traction after each curve so it does not spin.

-NOTE: check the tires and ground for dust and such, it wont work right with it.

now go try it, and dont get too frusterated! :D

MTL 01-18-2003 02:26 AM

ever since i had my bit, ive been trying to perfect the settings for it to drift the way i wanted it to..but sort of gave up ....and now my controller doesnt work and i havent used my bit in over a month...
if youve ever seen the larger rc cars like the MicroRs4 drift like mad, is because you can do it ALOT easier if u have proportional steering and overall better technology...

haha and yeah, PIE posted a decent link for about 50 short drifting vids...ive watched some of the longer ones at skool (which has a faster connection har har)
if u can, watch the video of the pink S14 that is about 6MB long..that is a good one...

drifting is slower when it comes to real cars racing on the track.
but it does look awsome when done correctly:)

MTL 01-18-2003 02:59 AM

ive actually seen an Option video of 2 Truenos drifting against an R34, and in the end the 2 Truenos won because they passed the skyline on the OUTSIDE of a turn....now this just seems strange, either the Truenos were highly tuned or the driver of the skyline just sucked....
so yeah, drifting isnt all about speed though, its about skill and control over your vehicle...thats why there are competitions and such

nrmcj 01-18-2003 10:39 AM

lol yeah, MTL i got that vid....

one of the 86s won im pretty sure cuz it had 200+ hp in a thin little shell, whereas the other one had about ... 1...60..?i think?

the important thing to note is that the skyline CAN drift, but it's very difficult, and your better off grip driving... the power/weight ratio works to the 86s' advantage, as well as the handling involved..

PWalk 01-18-2003 11:57 AM

yo thx for the link to the drift video site

nrmcj 01-18-2003 11:58 AM

np~

SuperAsian 01-18-2003 01:42 PM

i would have to agree here. the bits don't really drift, the power slide/oversteer in a corner. i've tried mulitple combinations including dual battery with a 2.6 and it still doesn't really drift.

on a side note, some of the car guys might find this funny, but ever seen the commericial of the nissan maxima doing a drift/slide? well my coworker bet that i couldn't get my maxima to do it and that the commericial was a computer mock up because FWD cars can drift. so we waited for it to get nice and icy and went to an empty parking lot and showed him FWD car CAN drift with the absence of good traction :)

nrmcj 01-18-2003 01:45 PM

:D go FWD all the way!! drifting an fwd takes hella skill.... it can be done on pavement, you just need to be going damn fast, and use the handbrake very well... my friend can do it in his prelude... which kinda scares me @_@

i'll stick to 240s and sylvias :D

(btw, which gen maxima was it?)

dieselboy 01-18-2003 03:27 PM

easily done in fwd cars with the use of a thick rear sway bar. It is harder to control than a rwd car becuase of the obvious.

XeroGT-R 01-18-2003 03:54 PM

Man I dont know what id do without my drift parts: 3.8,blue axle, turbo button, stock tires
Drifts so nicely....
--------------------
Drag-Easy
Cross Country-Moderate
Sideways-Hard as sh!t

Fourustwentius 01-18-2003 04:03 PM

I want to drift so bad, got a 3.8 and 150mah coming in the mail. I'll have to order the drift axle and booster kit though.

hogjowlz 01-18-2003 07:31 PM

150mah wont help you with speed at all. if anything it will make your car slightly heavier.

FWD is also called "Ass Slide" im serious...
ive also been told that if you have a VERY light rear on a FWD, you can drift easier (but still slow)...this means taking out everything from the rear seats and on,extra tire, jack, etc
i wouldnt recommend drifting in a fwd though...

Ghost of Akina 02-08-2003 09:35 PM

i can drift in Initial D-Arcade Stage :D I drive a Sileighty-parts B course-impact blue color and a Rx-7 Type R-parts A course(initial D) - yellow redsuns color

i can drift a bit charg kinda but its cheating on this turn i have a thing the you can turn into and hit the accelerator and it will just spin around the turn then turn out abit and it comes out of the turn kinda like gutter driving
